Used To Be Bobby and Darrick

st louis

#MIDWESTBEST in the maaahhh fuggginnn’ building! It’s your girl, MidWest Melly. I would like to introduce you to yet another Chi-Rock Nation collaboration. The “Used To Be Bobby & Darrick” album has been released August 12th and artists: Jah Ora (Bobby) and KD Assassin (Darrick) are putting St. Louis on the “Street Hop” map! Their infectious blend of Hip Hop mixed with soul, reggae and classic boom bap is something the game not only wants… it requires! It is the first collaborative effort from KD Assasssin and Jah Orah which also features MC923. While Stephen Instumental King (from Systematic Muzick), 44 Degreez, Josef Leimberg, Pop dDub, Tony Baines, Baby Paul, Akili and DJ Reminise produce plenty of magic… Jah and KD lyrically lay down the tricks, track for track.

Used To Be Bobby and Darrick

Stop What U Doing, every track on this album is a BANGER-BANGER. Self titled track, “Used To Be“, will give you a taste of the head knockin’ experience. Be prepared to press play and then repeat on “BruisHer” featuring Tef Poe. The song and video for “It’s Not The Same” have a serious West coast vibe and are an anthem to everybody and anything that used to be important in each of our lives. “No Way” has a rebellious reggae flow. Check the bonus track for the beat on “Troubled Mindz – Skinny Gorillaz” featuring MC923 as it is so, so, so serious. There are plenty more notable features including artists such as: Bo Dean, Aceyalone, Black Spade and Dharma Jean.

This is not your average production. This is not your average mainstream music. This is a reminder to everything REAL HIP HOP Used To Be and then some. Make sure ya’ll cop and rock this entire download. MidWest Melly, signing off! Shout out to my CRN4 family. ONE LOVE.

#MIDWESTBEST Interviews: “Timing Is Everything” with Kid Vishis

kid vishis

kid vishisDetroit artist and younger brother of Royce da 5’9″, Kid Vishis, has a lot to prove in the rap game. Good thing it’s a challenge he is more than willing to accept. He not only has real talent on his side, but he also has his brother’s full support. He was a guest appearance on Royce’s M.I.C. mixtape, the “Bar Exam” mixtapes,“Street Hop” and “Success is Certain”.   Vishis doesn’t plan on gaining success through his family ties alone.  This artist knows the value of hard work, consistency and timing. He released the first of his own “Sick Em” mixtape series, “Vishis Is Me”, in 2007. He joined the D12 tour in the Spring of 2009, released a second mixtape “Sick Em Vol 2 – Bar 4 Bar” in 2011, which was then followed by the 2013 mixtape “Vol 3 – I’m Alive”.

On July 22nd, Kid Vishis drops his first album, “Timing is Everything”, under Label: Seven 13 Entertainment. Although bigger brother, Royce da 5’9″, is featured on the song “Coward”, the rest of this album is ALL VISHIS… and it’s ALL GOOD too. Kid Vishis has selected producers that have a history of working with hip hop royalty such as Mr Porter of D12 / Shady, Chase Moore of Hippie Sabotage who has produced for Raekwon, Rock (Heltah Skeltah), Mistah FAB and Papoose, Nemisis (Tony Touch, Copywrite, Outerspace, Emilio Rojas) and Nick Zervos. Track for track, Kid Vishis, proves to be a competitor that is ready to claim his own championship belt.

I had the opportunity of linking up with Kid Vishis to discuss his new album, important lessons he has learned from Royce about the music industry, as well as what is next for this up and coming heavy weight in the hip hop game.

VishMic2
How has living in the Midwest, specifically Detroit, shaped your taste in music or contributed to your sound?

Detroit is really a pretty diverse city musically. I think the city has built me into a more diverse artist. Detroit keeps my hunger up because everybody is in competition for the money so I have to make sure I work hard so I can get my slice of the pie. That mentality came from Detroit. I have a little bit of all the O.G.’s styles mixed in with my own style so I definitely give that hardcore, hungry Detroit feel with my own lyrical twist.

Your new album is titled “Timing is Everything”. What does this title symbolize or represent to you?

The time is now for me to come like a thief in the night and kick ass and take names. July 22 is just a release date (for the album) but this is my year and that’s how it’s gonna be from now on. I’ve worked very hard on my craft and it’s time for the world to know it. Timing and patience is a virtue to me.  I feel like with the time I’ve put into my craft and the patience I’ve displayed through the years, it has worked itself into a great storyline for me to put out through records. It’s time for hip hop to hear it.

On Track 5, “Big Brothers”, you speak about your personal story in regards to blood being thicker than water. On track 11 “Coward”, your brother Royce da 5’9″ is featured. What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned from Royce da 5’9″ about friends, family and the music industry?

Well, all I have are my brothers as far as friends go. Guys in the industry are associates that know Kid Vishis and will never know Marcus Montgomery and I’m perfectly fine with that. I keep a very close circle of people around me that I trust and that believe in me as a person and as an artist. Royce just tells me to carry myself as a man of respect and a gentleman; and try not to compromise that as much as possible. Stay on top of your own business!

You lyrically have “The Juice” on Track 7 produced by Mr Porter of D12, who has also done some amazing work with Slaughterhouse. Tell us about the process and importance behind the selection of producers for this album.

I had to go with the guys who I have history with and who I knew I could depend on for dope beats for my album. I have eleven songs on the album and used 4 producers: Mr Porter, Chase Moore, Nemisis, and Nick Zervos.  We already had a chemistry going in to the album making process. Chase Moore blacked out and sent me just heat rock after heat rock so he ended up on most of the album. Nemisis sent a batch with some undeniable bangers and Nick Zervos sent a batch with that intro record (T.I.E.) in it… and I had to kill it! Mr Porter dropped two bombs on me and I went crazy on my notebook (laughs)!

What’s next for Kid Vishis?

I have some tours in the works right now in the UK, Europe and Canada. I hope they work out because I want the world to see me live. Also be on the lookout for another full length album this year with Seven13 Music and SickEM Entertainment. Follow me on Twitter and Instagram @KidVishis for further updates on all Kid Vishis related endeavors! Thank you guys for having me.

#MIDWESTBEST Angel Davanport “B$DN”

angel davanport

angel davanport 2

CHITOWN STAND UP!!! It’s your girl MidWest Melly and I’m blessin’ ya with yet another BEST from my favorite city in the MIDWEST! Angel Davanport is a Singer, Rapper, Songwriter, Poet and Model. YES. Ms. Davanport is a hustla’ homie. What I appreciate about Angel Davanport is her lyrical finesse. Her style is classically Chicago. She is unique in her own right but does remind me of (another one of my favorite Chicago female emcees) Kid Sister mixed with a little bit of Nitty Scott (also a “femcee” favorite). You can’t deny that Angel has sex appeal and a malice with the microphone which is a deadly combination!

“Apple of they eye. Here we go again. Ain’t nobody’s wife. Still got all these plans. They just say I’m trifling. Blame the way I am. Well that’s bullshit, money, drugs, niggas.” – Angel Davanport “B$DN”

Angel Davanport has only been in the rap game for a few years now but she has already made a name for herself in the industry. 2013 was a damn good year for this artist. She released smooth, “feel good” singles like “Outsiders” produced by Doc Da MindaBenda and tough-n-sexy joints like “Fameus” produced by Ray White. She had the support and attention of Strange Music and was featured alongside Game on Tech N9ne’s “Priorities” off of his album “Something Else”.

What’s new with Angel? I’m personally looking forward to this Nuu.Dee project and I’m also curious what Angel Davanport and her #RapperChicks clique have in store for this year. On Angel’s latest single, “B$DN”, produced by Professor Fox, Angel breaks down the meaning behind the acronym and title “B$DN”. I love a female artist that isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and Angel is no exception. This isn’t a sugar coated pop song about rainbows-and-unicorns-and-puppies-and-pixie-dust-and-shit. NAH. This is a real woman’s expression. It’s a lil’ poetry, a lil’ singing and a lot of rappin’. Can you handle that? Then press PLAY.

#MIDWESTBEST Crystal La’Juene “Like This”

wpid-screenshot_2014-06-29-14-12-03.png

wpid-screenshot_2014-06-29-14-12-03.png

CHI TOWN STAND UP!!! It’s your girl MidWest Melly serving up your biweekly dose of dopeness with #MIDWESTBEST. This time we do it real big for the Ladies with a very skillfull Southside female artist: Crystal La’Juene. Her sound has been compared to many legendary queens of hip hop such as: Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and Salt N Pepa. What makes Crystal stand out is the way she expresses herself through music as an intelligent and strong woman. You have to respect a female who is as pretty as she is gritty; she truly represents a real Chicago woman!

Crystal La’Juene is a master at selecting talented producers as I’ve heard from her previous work with homie DJ Herc on tracks like “What’s Happening”. Grant Parks is no exception to the rule. Grant Parks has already worked with Hip Hop Heavyweights such as: Malik Yusef, Rhymefest, Sadat X and Grand Puba (Brand Nubian) and Pharoahe Monch to name a few. It’s without a doubt a dynamic producer/emcee pairing.

Like This” is a track included on a Grant Parks project with Vudu Spellz cleverly named “Hip Hop – The Rebirth (Real MCs Real Skillz)” mixtape. The track speaks on Crystal’s ability to lyrically “flex” on the competition.

“On the mental, killing the instrumentals, style be influential, simple but complex. Study long as you want, however don’t wan’ test. High frequency penetrating your vortex.” – Crystal La’Juene

I really dig the video which highlights the simplicity of the notebook paper background in contrast to Crystal’s complex lyrical breakdown. It helps the message to really resonate with the viewer and makes her wordplay the main focus. I wouldn’t call it a #MIDWESTBEST if I didn’t “Like This”, but press play and find out for yourself!

Crystal Lajuene-Like This (Official Music Video) from Nosaki on Vimeo.

Crystal La’Juene has opened up for shows that featured Teedra Moses, Dwele, Lady of Rage, Special Ed, and Big Daddy Kane. She has been featured on Blog Talk Radio, WHPK University of Chicago Radio, Writer’s Block Club Magazine’s “Top 25 Chicago Artist You Should Know” list, H.A.S. Magazine, and the list goes on. In addition to being a talented singer, songwriter and rapper, Crystal also is a barber/braid/loc stylist and makes jewelry, crochets and is the owner of Looks & Style located at: 332 E. 75th Street in Chicago, IL.

#MIDWESTBEST A-Hi “SkyWalkers”

CHITOWN STAND UP! My name is MidWestMelly and I am the latest addition to the Nikkisiixx Team, and your new Windy City representative. ***Insert 20 “applause” emojis*** (Thank you, thank you). I proudly present you with a biweekly feature called: #MIDWESTBEST. I’ll be blessing your ears and eyes with the finest, freshest and flyest reviews on up and coming artists from my Hometown, CHICAGO! So without further ado… let’s get this thing poppin’!

poppin and lockin

If the city of Chicago was a portrait, the skyline would be its most colorful and creative focal point. Even in the city’s coldest and darkest months, there is something about that skyline that is symbolic of the soul that exists within its jagged outline. Chicago artist, A-Hi, lyrically paints a picture of this feeling with his introductory track off of the recently released album, Skywalkers.

“I’m lifted, can’t come down if I try. Don’t want to fix this. I’m addicted to this life, I can’t lie. And now I’m so high, I take a walk through the sky.” – A-Hi

There is something about this track that just makes me feel good. It makes me want to jump in my ride right now. I want to take a trip to the city with my windows down while feeling the breeze flowing through my hair. It makes me want to catch the skyline right at sunset and visualize that I am… well… Skywalking.

I love the meaning behind A-Hi’s lyrics on the track and the original vocals by Lisa Movado and Isaiah Jones only heighten the symbolic wordplay. The beat and production by Ray White is timeless. I can also appreciate the filiming by Kool Guy w/Eaze and flawless editing by Tone Famous. As a fan of music and the message it inspires, the vision that is provided through video is something that can leave an everlasting impression when it is done correct!

The album is an overall solid project and includes many features such as: Berner (Taylor Gang) on “Blown”, Vic Spencer on “Oh My”, and Alex Wiley (Save Money) on “Mind Elevation”. One of the highlights include, “Who Am I”, a song where A-Hi introduces himself and his story of becoming an artist including the lessons he has learned along the way. “Like That” produced by R.A.D. is ILLer than Illinois and I definitely caught myself zonin’ to “So Lit” which has a very chill vibe. “The City of Chicago” is a personal favorite specifically because it has an especially soulful beat and showcases A-Hi’s signature Windy City flow. Check out the dope artwork on the cover which represents A-Hi’s icon as “The HaveNaut”.

“It’s human nature to want more than what we have, and unfortunately, most of us never get it. The HaveNaut (derived from astronaut) reflects the idea of exploration of the mind and spacing out to escape these harsh realities.” – www.thehavenaut.com
