Project Review: Idiotic Oddity – Idiotic Oddity EP

idiotic-oddity

[NAPTOWN, INDIANAPOLIS] Idiotic Oddity is a unique artist that mixes hip-hop, pop, and rock within his genre. This presents a wide arrange of sounds that Idiotic Oddity adapted to quickly. You may think is a bit out of the norm, but who is normal nowadays? Oddity’s also does his own vocals, making an appearance on his hooks/chorus. Really catchy! Wanting me to press replay. Idiotic Oddity released his self titled EP Idiotic Oddity. I find this to be a great introduction to who Oddity is as an artist. The refreshing production and melodies reminded me of one of my favorite Indie Electronic Duos The Limousines. With a dancy 80’s synth and 90’s influenced pop. But Idiotic Oddity provides a hip-hop flow to his verses. Idiotic Oddity EP is a five track project, here’s what I thought about my favorite tracks off of it.

CERTAIN WAY One thing I really like about this song is the production and the catchiness of the hook. Oddity expresses his interest in someone whose not giving the attention he wanted, so he just had to let them go. Admitting his true feelings to her, knowing he’ll be burning their bridge of friendship since he knew the feelings weren’t reciporcal. Regardless, in a way it’s for the best, since he started to feel like he was being led on from a far.

EVERYTHING TO ME Here’s another track where Oddity is expressing himself to a woman of interest. Predicting scenarios if they were to be together. One thing I like about this track is Oddity’s slower flow. You’re able to fully listen to his dialogue and I feel he gets his point across.

TONIGHT ALONE Oddity has the capability to make a catchy hook! Here’s a track where the production takes us more on the rock and roll side. Oddity adapted a faster delivery over the guitar riffs. It just goes to show that Idiotic Oddity is able to work on different sounding music. This track really gives off an indie electronic style. Which I don’t mind because I enjoy that type of genre.

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 3.47.00 PMIdiotic Oddity is inspired from artist like Frank Ocean, Drake, Tyler The Creator, and Childish Gambino. You can sense what artists inspired how he took his hooks and melodies with Frank Ocean and Drake while Tyler The Creator and Childish Gambino inspired his lyrical approach to his storytelling. With Oddity and his music it catches the listeners’s attention and sparking their curiosity. If you’re diggin’ the Idiotic Oddity EP make sure to listen via SPOTIFY. And follow him on all his social media links to stay in the loop.

Project Review: BLACK-EP – Lyric Le’Velle

unnamed-2

[Fort Worth, TexasAlbum Cover] Hot on the heels of his single, Proud (reviewed here), Lyric Le’Velle has released the excellent BLACK-EP. Le’Velle worked with multiple producers on this EP in order to provide a varied soundscape for your enjoyment. He explores many different types of sounds in order to flex his lyrical muscles and succeeds in almost all of his attempts.

The first track on the EP, Tainted Intro, acts as a mission statement for the songs that are to follow. He lets you know what’s up with lyrically precise bravado as he raps “Now we in this moth******er, ten toes deep/kickin’ game, speakin’ slang mainly kinfolk speak”. He asserts himself as having both his feet firmly planted in the rap game and as willing to reach out to those willing to understand his language.

unnamed-3Speaking of which, he definitely takes the language of lyrics and makes it all his own. He’s a gifted story teller whose words don’t just explain his world, but actually bring you right into it. Tell Me  takes us on a journey through Texas, Hunger  has you riding along with Lyric Le’Velle in a world where it’s tough to make ends meet, and he has his greatest story telling moment on the emotionally charged Trissa.

Trissa  is a standout track. If hip hop was an exam, then Lyric Le’Velle would pass the story telling section with an A+ because of this song. In the interest of not spoiling it for first time listeners there won’t be any more details in this review, so definitely bump that joint and run it back a couple of times. Trissa  comes from a very real place and after hearing Le’Velle spit the lyrics, you can’t help but feel like you’re getting to know him or at least you’re getting to know his mind.

Sonically, there are a couple risks taken on this EP and some work better than others. US  sees the Fort Worth rhyme slinger trying to jazz up the EP over a beat with a saxophone that can be a little bit jarring and doesn’t fully gel with the rest of the project. On the other hand we have the excellent Session #2  which, while it also seems like a departure from the overall sound spectrum of the EP, is a perfect marriage of interesting production and introspective lyrics.

The album has nearly no stumbles, takes risks in the right places, has excellent beats and, most of all, it has a consistent level of high quality lyricism throughout. The BLACK-EP doesn’t pretend to be turn up music. It also doesn’t try to beat you over the head with the lyrics by jamming too many words into a small place. This album’s success is in its personality. Lyric Le’Velle shows us that Lyricism isn’t about how many syllables you can jam into a bar, but it’s about if you can make a complete stranger feel you.

Mission accomplished.

The Queen is King Cover.JPEG

Screen Shot 2015-08-30 at 12.46.04 PM[WEST COAST] Ashley Bank$ is a force to be reckoned with. Femcee and Lyricist inspired by old school influencers such as Ice Cube, DJ Quick, and The Dogg Pound. Ashley Bank$ releases her debut mixtape The Queen Is King. Growing up in LA during its Gang Era gave Ashley Bank$ a tough persona that is respected from jump. A Bachelor’s Degree graduate mixed with her street creditability. She’s currently working on becoming the first female rapper to represent the West Coast on a national level. Ashley’s diverse background and life experiences make a true representation of the Hip-Hop scene. Does Ashley Bank$ have what it takes to take the throne? The Queen Is King mixtape is filled with club bangers, raw underground, new age, and old school sounds without missing a beat. Playful lyrics and heavy metaphors when the occasion calls for it. The title represents what Ashley Bank$ is trying to bring to the music industry,” The Queen is King“. Women in general aren’t given enough credit for what they achieve so she’s trying to make it known that women are the backbone for a lot of success and her goal for females as people, and especially hip-hop artist to be seen as equals or being the best. My favorite tracks off the project our Leave Me Lonely, Don’t Do Me, Get It How I Get It, Wavy, Bang Out, and Pole Dreams. Project Review: Lamont – Respect My Grind

lamont - respect my grind

2E4A4688[MIAMI, FLORIDA] Growing up in different neighborhoods from North Miami Beach, to Overtown, to Perrine, and even down to Homestead. Lamont was living and dealing with the struggles of living in the inner city. Even witnessing his parents battle drug addiction which gave him the strength to vow to never sell those drugs under any kind of circumstance. This is where Lamont truly began developing himself as a person. Currently, Lamont has released his Respect My Grind project that consists of five tracks. I gotta say that Respect My Grind was very well put together. Project credits from recorded by Lifer Entertainment, Mixed by D.Shim Productions, and Executive Produced by Lamont himself. Respect My Grind has a powerful vivid honesty that goes well with his empathetic lyrics. Lamont starts with Disclaimer, bringing that hardcore side of himself with the grittiness of his flow. Then Lamont brings with his next track MASHED POTATOES. Feel with R&B vibes and a catchy hook. A track to get your girl in the mood. The following track is entitled ANOTHER YEAR, which is dedicated to all the people you know who are no longer here. _E4A4760Its like we need to celebrate cause we’re here for another year. Another dope track with those R&B vibes. Then Lamont takes us to church with his track LORD KNOWS. Lamont goes in on this one, he describes a woman asking why they took her baby, he was killed from violence on the street. RESPECT MY GRIND is more of a fun, soulful track where Lamont gives you his back story and let’s you know the only way to work is going the hardest. My favorite tracks are Disclaimer, Mashed Potatoes, and Another Year. But my all time favorite track has to be MASHED POTATOES, because how catchy it is and his flow is sick on this one. Your left impressed with his capability to flow on these different sounding tracks. Lamont did a mixture of sampled and boom-bap beats. Respect The Grind is worth the listen since Lamont is standing up in his artistry and expressing himself the best way he knows how, and that’s through his music. Be on the look out for more releases from Lamont by following his social media links.

Fifteen Tracks, DEAD DUCK‘s production was brought to you by Arkutec, Bravestarr, CJ Beatz, Superstar O and others to bring that 90’s organic hip-hop to the project. DEAD DUCK title comes from the American idiom. SaFE thinks that real hip-hop has been declared unsuccessful and useless. Each track expresses his strong feelings towards the culture. DEAD DUCK also a symbol in his brand, Duckhunters. The Duckhunter philosophy charges the participant to reclaim control over their adversities— both internal and external— and overcome them to realize their dreams. The project rides through eight tracks. The producers who were involved were able to grasp that overall dark undertone that SIN needed to express making a triumph over his bully. Producers were: Rojas On The Beat, Nick Leon, Scottzilla, Nuez, The Pyrvmids, Anthology, and Dark Night. SIN only had one feature and that was with REKS on the Shakedown track. Download: Klassik – Autumn EP

klassik autumn ep artwork

As time passes, feelings and vibes can change too. Inspired by the seasons throughout the year, Milwaukee Hip-Hop/R&B Artist Klassik presents us with his Autumn EP. Pretty dope considering over this passed weekend Pigeons & Planes premiered the project on their site. Warmer days are fewer and farther between, but in the days before you buckle down from the frost of WINTER again. 1427778020 The AUTUMN season allows for an introspective harvest of all vibrations and energy that allows you to be creative. Klassik is able to maintain this because he gets super soulful with his melodic singing and he produced the tracks himself. Recorded and mastered by Mammyth Audio. For being three tracks long, the project holds the fort down. Only if it had about 2-3 more tracks, then I would of felt it more complete. But hey, Klassik definitely has a new sense to where R&B and Hip-Hop can come together. Take a look at the other season projects Klassik came up with within this passed year: WINTERSPRINGSUMMER. Download: Latrell James – TWELVE

Artowrk

Last thing we have from Boston Rapper Latrell James was his music video for THE BUTTON. Which is also on his current project entitled Twelve. My favorite tracks off of Latrell James Twelve are Beautiful Day, Distance, Flying Nimbus, The Button, On My Own, and Candles. Twelve represents Latrell’s life from age 12 to 24. Dealing with changes and growing on his journey from adolescence to adulthood. The project was self-produced alongside his brother Tedd Boyd. Great overall production.

Check out the visual for his single ON MY OWN. Directed by Downlow Productions. ON MY OWN explains a point in Latrell’s life where he felt he needed to remove certain people that were preventing him from earning success. The music video you’re able to sense Latrell on his own and keeping focus on his lyrics.

Sometimes it can take a lifetime of trials and tribulations for a person realize their true aspirations. For me, the maturation of my artistic journey can be experienced in a span of twelve years. – Latrell James

While Latrell James continues to work hard in accomplishing his dreams in becoming an established artist, we just have to wait and see what he has next.

Review: Alex Wiley – One Singular Flame Emoji EP

alex-wiley-one-singular-flame-emoji

Even though this project was released back March 2015 I feel like you need to download it like right now! Why because Alex Wiley presents us with his One Singular Flame Emoji EP which presents us trance like flows over psychedelic/drum & bass production. It was pretty dope how Wiley released his project directly to his fans who were following him on twitter. Screen Shot 2015-05-25 at 10.49.50 PM They were able to get the first listen. One Singular Flame Emoji EP is definitely on another level.. Favorite tracks off the EP are: Whip, Solo, Spark Something, Right Right featuring Kembe X, Ready, and Top of The World. We had featured Right Right on NikkiSiixx.com view what I thought out about the track review. Wiley was working on a proper follow-up to his Village Party. He was under major stress because he was focusing heavily on concepts, themes, and the pressures associated with following up a critically & fan approved project. He was able to devote 30 days Alex Wiley was making fun songs that reminded him about what he enjoyed most about rap. Currently Alex Wiley is closing up on his new LP. Stay in the loop with Alex Wiley by following him on his social media links below, you never know what to expect.

Screen Shot 2015-02-05 at 2.37.23 PM

Screen Shot 2015-02-05 at 2.37.23 PM

IzztheUnknown is a young artist that invokes the Golden-Age of Hip-Hop with his music. He embraces the year 1995, which is basically the introduction to his mixtape and his year of birth. Seems like he gained some type of ancestral spirits from artists like the Lords of the Underground, Public Enemy, EPMD, and GZA. His style sounds like the streets of 1990s New York. Which he sounds great over these tracks, IzztheUnknown raps over nine instrumentals from 1995 artists such as Wu-tang, Eazy E, Bone Thugs and more. My favorite tracks off 1995 are 1] Once Upon A Time 2] Ride To It 5] Back In A Dazeee & 6] No Competition. Diggin’ his flows? Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 11.22.29 PMRock Steady Crew Member/Poet-MC/Queen of the Ring/Latina/Activist MyVerse is debuting the new year with her album State of the Art. The thirteen track album gives you a closer look into MyVerse’s Universe. Starting the project with her spoken word on P.O.E.T, in which she speaks so passionately. MyVerse is the essence of hip-hop. She portrays the style, vibe, and overall experience. Her track Vida Linda captures MyVerse hispanic roots (Puerto Rico/Panama) with her Spanish lyrics over this dope hip-hop beat produced by BaseCampBeats. She also rips it in SPANISH, on Orijen. She’s definitely on point over Butterscotch’s beatboxing.

What don’t you love about MyVerse? Not only she can rap and sing she can also direct and edit her own music videos. Check out these two off her State of the Art album with Vida Linda and Black Swan.

State of the Art; overall is a great listen definitely an 9/10. MyVerse gives her all throughout the creative process for this album. Amazing beat selection, insane lyrics, and some dope features from Jon Connor (Track 7 – Keep On) and Jonny Storm (Track 9 – Rosey). This is a must download! Don’t forget to click the cover art above to get the link via iTunes.
