[ALBUM REVIEW] 6 Cardinal – Flourish

flourish-front-cover

Making his return on NikkiSiixx.com we have South Florida artist, 6 Cardinal. This time he brings us his latest album entitled FLOURISH. 6 Cardinal is not your ordinary artist, he also makes original beats and writes his own lyrics. During the creation of FLOURISH 6 Cardinal flew from South Florida to Brooklyn for a few days with hopes to capture New York City’s ambience and his creative chemistry with Ace in one collection of songs created from scratch. And after the first listen of FLOURISH you can definitely feel 6’s inspiration.

FLOURISH represents 6 Cardinal’s journey back to his musical roots. On the production side, FLOURISH forgoes the electronic-influenced production heard in his recent output in favor of the soulful and sample-heavy brand of production marking his earlier projects, which is provided by 6’s longtime friend, collaborator, and Brooklyn-based boom-bap maestro Ace Fayce.

For my review, I’ll be breaking down my favorite tracks. FLOURISH has a total of eight tracks. The ones that really stood out to me are The Name pt. IV, Ring The Alarm, Nine2Five, Royals, LuvJawn, and Outro. So let’s get this review underway.

6 cardinal 6[THE NAME PT. IV] Starting it out with straight BARS! 6 Cardinal keeps he’s lyrical content fresh! 6 stays on beat and really emphasizes old school hip-hop with his choice in production. Even though the track is only 2:32, it leaves the listener wanting more.

[RING THE ALARM] Word is bond! 6 Cardinal paints a vivid picture with his lyrics, line after line. You gotta nod your head to this one. One line that caught my attention was “Sicker than the flu, Ah-chu! You infected now“.

[NINE2FIVE] This is one of my favorite tracks off the album. How can you not relate? Working that 9 to 5 that drains you from what you really want to do. Its like you’re falling down a bottomless pit that same thing over and over, which sounds extremely exhausting. The production on this track is overall so beautiful. Very delicate, but still has the elements of a hip-hop track.

6 cardinal fl
[ROYALS] I find 6 Cardinal fits perfectly with old-school hip-hop production. He sounds on point and his flow is too. The subject of this track is drug use. And what a perfect display of it with his first music video from FLOURISH. The visual artwork and art direction was created by Sean Walton. Love the visual really puts you on a psychedelic trip. But I do have to say I feel this track was a bit short, so gives us more 6 Cardinal!

[LUVJAWN] 6 Cardinal opens up and talks about LOVE. He talks about all the little moments that he truly cherishes. He even touches base on some intimate moments as well. His hook was inspired by Lil Kim and Notorious B.I.G – Crush On You. But made it his own.

[OUTRO] The overall feeling on this track is so positive. From the production and 6 Cardinal realness, this track kinda gives me those summer time vibes. I really like the auto-tuned chipmunk voice for the hook. “Keep the mind so open“. Great way to end the project.

Flourish. Flourish in life; in love; and in spirit.

Flourish in immortal youth, Unhurt amidst the wars of elements, The wrecks of matter, and the crush of worlds.” – Joseph Addison

This concludes my review on 6 Cardinal’s FLOURISH Album. Overall the project was a great listen. 6 Cardinal really embodies the roots of hip-hop with his stellar performance on FLOURISH. If you’re diggin’ the project as much as I am. Make sure to let 6 Cardinal know! Show your support by following him on all his social media links below:

[MUSIC VIDEO] HOPE – Food For Funk

hope - food for funk

[LOS ANGELES] Making his debut on NikkiSiixx.com, HOPE brings his first visual FOOD FOR FUNK. HOPE creates a cool-chill laid back vibe on this one. HOPE’s style is pretty dope with that boom-bap flow. FOOD FOR FUNK visual is completely in black and white, except for a comedic skit with all his friends and they’re just slurping their empty drinks. You can find this track on his EP called Sunday Blues. Good vibes from HOPE and be on the look out for more content.

Project Review: Lamont – Respect My Grind

lamont - respect my grind

2E4A4688[MIAMI, FLORIDA] Growing up in different neighborhoods from North Miami Beach, to Overtown, to Perrine, and even down to Homestead. Lamont was living and dealing with the struggles of living in the inner city. Even witnessing his parents battle drug addiction which gave him the strength to vow to never sell those drugs under any kind of circumstance. This is where Lamont truly began developing himself as a person. Currently, Lamont has released his Respect My Grind project that consists of five tracks. I gotta say that Respect My Grind was very well put together. Project credits from recorded by Lifer Entertainment, Mixed by D.Shim Productions, and Executive Produced by Lamont himself. Respect My Grind has a powerful vivid honesty that goes well with his empathetic lyrics. Lamont starts with Disclaimer, bringing that hardcore side of himself with the grittiness of his flow. Then Lamont brings with his next track MASHED POTATOES. Feel with R&B vibes and a catchy hook. A track to get your girl in the mood. The following track is entitled ANOTHER YEAR, which is dedicated to all the people you know who are no longer here. _E4A4760Its like we need to celebrate cause we’re here for another year. Another dope track with those R&B vibes. Then Lamont takes us to church with his track LORD KNOWS. Lamont goes in on this one, he describes a woman asking why they took her baby, he was killed from violence on the street. RESPECT MY GRIND is more of a fun, soulful track where Lamont gives you his back story and let’s you know the only way to work is going the hardest. My favorite tracks are Disclaimer, Mashed Potatoes, and Another Year. But my all time favorite track has to be MASHED POTATOES, because how catchy it is and his flow is sick on this one. Your left impressed with his capability to flow on these different sounding tracks. Lamont did a mixture of sampled and boom-bap beats. Respect The Grind is worth the listen since Lamont is standing up in his artistry and expressing himself the best way he knows how, and that’s through his music. Be on the look out for more releases from Lamont by following his social media links.

Download: Brenton – The One Who Knocks Mixtape

Brenton Knock It Off

brenton im cool photo[MIAMI, FLORIDA] Hip-Hop Artist Brenton recently released his official mixtape release for “The One Who Knocks“. The fifteen track mixtape is inspired by Oddisee, 9th Wonder, The Alchemist and others, as well as original production from J57, PCP Beatz and Elite Producers. And how about Breaking Bad? Right at the beginning in The One Who Knocks Intro you hear Walter White telling his wife Skylar that he’s danger and throughout the mixtape you hear snippets from the show. For this track: KNOCK IT OFF featuring Kris Kasanova on the track and amazing production by J57 from Brown Bag Allstars. Really diggin’ this slow 90’s style to KNOCK IT OFF. Boom-bap heads out there can vibe out to this. Brenton takes the first verse as Kris Kasanova closes it off with the second. Some of my favorite tracks we’re: I’M COOL (Inspired By 9th Wonder), FEELIN IT (Inspired By Jay-Z), LET THE BEAT DROP featuring Phil The Thrill (Inspired By Xaphoon Jones), and THE L-O-V-E Song (Inspired By Oddisee). This Brooklyn Native shows his roots by choosing tracks inspired by artist from that state. Don’t forget to download THE ONE WHO KNOCKS by Brenton and follow him on social media.

The “Used To Be Bobby & Darrick” album has been released August 12th and artists: Jah Ora (Bobby) and KD Assassin (Darrick) are putting St. Louis on the “Street Hop” map! Their infectious blend of Hip Hop mixed with soul, reggae and classic boom bap is something the game not only wants… it requires! It is the first collaborative effort from KD Assasssin and Jah Orah which also features MC923. While Stephen Instumental King (from Systematic Muzick), 44 Degreez, Josef Leimberg, Pop dDub, Tony Baines, Baby Paul, Akili and DJ Reminise produce plenty of magic… Jah and KD lyrically lay down the tricks, track for track.

Used To Be Bobby and Darrick

Stop What U Doing, every track on this album is a BANGER-BANGER. Self titled track, “Used To Be“, will give you a taste of the head knockin’ experience. Be prepared to press play and then repeat on “BruisHer” featuring Tef Poe. The song and video for “It’s Not The Same” have a serious West coast vibe and are an anthem to everybody and anything that used to be important in each of our lives. “No Way” has a rebellious reggae flow. Check the bonus track for the beat on “Troubled Mindz – Skinny Gorillaz” featuring MC923 as it is so, so, so serious. There are plenty more notable features including artists such as: Bo Dean, Aceyalone, Black Spade and Dharma Jean.

This is not your average production. This is not your average mainstream music. This is a reminder to everything REAL HIP HOP Used To Be and then some. Make sure ya’ll cop and rock this entire download. MidWest Melly, signing off! Shout out to my CRN4 family. ONE LOVE.

Mixtape Review: XALI – The American House Slave

Xali_Theamericanhouseslave-front-large

Xali_Theamericanhouseslave-front-large

XALI (ZA-LI) is a hip-hop artist that was born in the Bronx and now resides in Ft.Lauderdale. As a member of IMC and front man of the SoFlo movement; along with South Florida artist VON, they share a common goal: To make their mark on hip-hop. Through this transition, XALI’s goal is to shed light through hip-hop using knowledge, experiences and the untold truth hidden in the world. Influenced by his passion for poetry, the transition to hip-hop became effortless to him; Therefore making it his number one priority.

His music is a form of art though stories of pain, love, unfortunate experiences and life inspirations. Xali releases his first official mixtape The American House Slave. This project is definitely worth the listen. This mixtape contains twenty-one tracks, which they all provide you with a story, rhythm, and dopeness. Throughout this review, I will discuss my six favorite tracks off The American House Slave. Here we go: (Don’t forget to press play while you read! Enjoy the music)

[100.GRAMS] Xali is letting them know that he is going to be different. He demonstrates this through his flow. How? Because of his word play, the truth behind his lyrics, and his demeanor on the beat. Love that boom-bap production that actually presents itself throughout the entire mixtape. You can tell Xali is inspired with 90’s hip-hop through his vibe. Which I can’t complain cause it’s definitely a nice refreshing change compared to what the current state of hip-hop sounds like.

[SUPREME] This guy is crazy when it comes to his flow. His presence on this beat is ridiculous! You can bob your head to this one. The production on this track is strong and has a sense of darkness. “See the prophet. Pictures of american profit. Lock ya pockets. Opt for a higher option… Half of my mind is gone from the drug abuse ..Smoking addiction to calm my nerves. I’m a troubled youth… Blessed with the diction to rape with words. Imma fxck the booth.

[2BLUNTS] For the track 2Blunts, Xali was able to create a visual for it. But before we get to the video let’s talk about this song. Besides the production being on point, (Shoutout to Napsthelionman). Xali takes us through a session with his boys. Smoking out and chilling out. Really like the solo, black and white shots. Pretty dope intro with the smoke creeping up into the title name. You can definitely vibe out to this one. & don’t forget to watch the visual as well.

HappyXa

[MARIJUANA.TIMES] I swear this track has that fun sense to it. Xali goes all out on this one. Expressing the way he feels about Marijuana and what he does with it. You get that 90’s boom-bap with a vibe of summertime. Xali states “Resurrection of the hippies”…if you’re apart of the movement, then we’re all joining forces! Definitely a fun track. Had this on repeat x25. Love the charisma on the track. Who can’t relate?

Marijuana times,
Marijuana times,
1 blunt with 4 dimes,
For my marijuana mind,
I’m searching…

[KICK.BACK] This track has that street edge to it, dark but dope. Xali is dropping knowledge. Definitely liking the hook.

Q: NIKKISIIXX: What inspired you to write Kick Back?
A: XALI: The song reminds me of some Wu-tang. Methon Man and Redman type vibe. The entry is strictly based on me describing myself in the first four bars..then transitioning to dropping knowledge while keeping the boom-bap alive.

Check out his third verse!
I’m talking when its cold and all the bitch nigas fly south /
And darkness pull you deep .
Who gone climb out
See nigas pull they shrine out/
Praising they time out .
The type spirit make you shake till your dollars and dimes out /
Empty ya mind out /
one God we trust .
Slay youth for da pesos .
pray to jesus’ for your pay flow //
Nigas will sacrafice their soul before they say no
To money thats a day old
From blood drawn under tables . /
And if they do . Know they living in a fxckin fable .
Sometimes a bitch niga isn’t able /

[THE.RIGHT1] Xali expresses himself through song about a tragic loss he had. On December 11, 2012 Xali lost his father to Cancer. So unfortunate to loose someone dear to you and especially under the circumstances of disease. Throughout the song I felt Xali was talking and expressing himself things to his father on THE.RIGHT1.

If you missed out on Xali’s Release Party for The American House Slave check out the video below for a short recap of the best moments from the party.

Xali describes his personal life experiences to express his views towards the hip-hop culture. The American House Slave mixtape focuses on the struggle of the middle and lower class. The concept is captured through his lyrics and presents that our culture is mentally enslaved and the people consider it home: America.

Stay tuned for any future updates from Xali by following his links below! Also, Xali will be performing at MIAJAMFEST 02/07/2014 at The Stage Miami. View more details via NIKKISIIXX.COM.
