[ALBUM REVIEW] AJB4 – Organic Growth

AJB4 - Organic Growth FRONT

[CHATTANOOGA, TN] This will actually be AJB4 first official post on NikkiSiixx.com. He did make an appearance with his single I BE THAT, in a previous project review I did for Samurai Shin VS Xia-Dawn. This time we have my review on his latest album Organic Growth. But before I get into the review, lets get to know him a bit better.

Growing up with the church and traveling all over the world due to his father love for God and his strength being a chaplain in the military. In 2008 his cousin and himself started to create rap songs that showed their devotion for the church. Which later turned into something greater, the love to becoming a musician and perfecting his craft. Lets look eight years down the line, here’s where AJB4 has released six projects and he’s received radio play from various online radio stations like K107FMJamz, GospelSynergy Radio and QSJRadio.

Throughout the ten track album, AJB4 presents us with solid work. The tracks I felt that really stood out to me were Loaded, Figure It Out, Its On Me, Spam Musubi, and You Don’t Know. Here’s what I thought are Organic Growth.

[02. LOADED] I really wish AJB4 started the album with this track. It really grabs my attention. AJB4 comes loaded and locked, with God by his side he feels there’s no room for error. He fights for what he believes in. Melodic harmonies in the hook, its hard not to recite it.

[03. FIGURE IT OUT] AJB4 opens up his heart, to the one that befriended him. Even though there was something more but it ended up in the trash. Growing up and becoming a man, AJB4 knows what he wants. And won’t let anyone hurt him when it comes to love. This tracks production makes me want to move back and forth. Even feels trance-like.

[05. ITS ON ME] I find this to be my favorite track off Organic Growth. Who hasn’t experience a relationship where the other half expect perfection from you. Causing stress and unnecessary pressure in not messing up. Or for some reason everything is your fault. AJB4 expresses his lyrics with a sense of wittiness. Even when breaking down the second verse and how she flipped so fast like he never existed and blocking him out of her life. At least AJB4 admits to his messes.

AJB4 - Organic Growth BACK

[08. SPAM MUSUBI] AJB4 talks about a girl of interest, that feels could be the one for him. Meeting her online, developing a dating relationship, talking all the time, and having something he thinks is real from afar. Kinda like it’s too good to be true, but that didn’t work out. Decides to make a move on someone but later found out she was in a relationship. AJB4 is looking for someone who’s real and not fake! I really like AJB4 flow on this one.

[10. YOU DON’T KNOW] AJB4 has been through a lot of struggles. But regardless he looks up to God and here’s where he can strive for greatness. Even have a close death experience it hit him like a ton of bricks. Feeling free and going down the right path. Talking about his story, he hopes you can learn from his mistakes.

AJB4 says his main goals are to make good positive music, praise God, keep it real, and share experiences in his life.

This concludes my album review of AJB4 Organic Growth, I broke down my favorite stand out tracks. Which tracks you felt were you’re favorite? Interview: JamalG

JamalG

[Baltimore City, MD] When creating music, JamalG often feels like he has a duty or an obligation to speak for those who may not know how to speak for themselves. Being a vessel for his community, God, and the culture. He keeps a constant state of awareness. Releasing his track THESE WINGS. First single off of To Whom It May Concern 2: Final Draft featuring DMV’s own Huskey Hazel. JamalG writes music to use as the initial point of recovery and then performs them as therapy. Not only does he do it for his supporters but he does it for himself. He truly cares for the culture… Because he is the culture. I was able to have a interview with the Baltimore City Native and here’s what he had to say.

jamalg on stage soundcheckNIKKISIIXX: Blizz to Jamal G. Why did you decide on the name change?

JAMALG: Blizz is my neighborhood name. People in my area know me as Biggz younger brother or Blizz. I felt like I’ve changed a lot since I was that kid who just jumped off the porch. So in embracing my middle name I feel like it can take me a little further and push me to those different markets.

NIKKISIIXX: From what I hear from your music I see that you’re just trying to inspire your listeners to be great. What inspire you to take this route with your music?

JAMALG: The people. We have so many odds stacked up against us that when we finally do hear/see that inspiration it becomes that breath of fresh air that’s needed to carry on.

NIKKISIIXX: Sometimes by asking what’s someone’s favorite color you’ll be able to find out a little bit on that person. So what’s your favorite color and why?

JAMALG: It would have to be Black because it’s a strong color. Calm but bold. If you don’t pay attention it could be off putting at first glance but when you give it time, you find out how powerful it can be. The most simple decision I’ve made in my life is having black as a favorite color.

jamalg on stage photo NIKKISIIXX: How do you feel about Baltimore City Underground Hip-Hop Culture?

JAMALG: I love it! My loved ones are continuously working and making great music to shift the energy in Baltimore City.

NIKKISIIXX: Are you working on any new projects or is anything new you’ll like to share?

JAMALG: My new album “To Whom It May Concern 2: Final Draft” is set to release later this summer. It came out to be a great body of work that just makes sense for not only my community but for the Y and Millennial generation groups. Also, I’m currently on tour in Wales right now, but I will be home in August. I’m putting together an unplugged show for the album release in Baltimore City. More details will be revealed at a later date.

NIKKISIIXX: What inspired your THESE WINGS single?

JAMALG: These Wings was just something inspired by the space I was in at the time. I didn’t have a real direction for the album but I knew I wanted to make a statement for my community. I sent it to Husky and he wrote the hook and it was just on from there.

NIKKISIIXX: What is your opinion on Mainstream Hip-Hop?

JAMALG: It is what its suppose to be I guess. I haven’t really gotten the chance to focus on the mainstream to much lately but I’m sure you can find some gems there.

NIKKISIIXX: Any Last Words?

JAMALG: Thank you for the opportunity, I truly appreciate it. I hope everyone follows me on all social media so they can get a chance to buy the album in all online stores when it comes out later this summer. Love!

New Music: The Cool Quest – God (Mixtape)

god

god

The Cool Quest is on a search for just that, the cool, and so much more. A young emcee out of Brooklyn, Cool Quest is coming correct with his third full offering in the form of ‘God’. Never short on confidence, Cool has long claimed his stake alongside the modern heads of hip-hop through his always-entertaining Twitter. ‘God’ does a lot to bring some credibility to that statement. Don’t even take this blogger’s word for it; do yourself a favor and check out the tape. Even if the rhymes don’t stick, The Cool Quest makes it easy to find a silver lining in his production prowess and sample selection.

[DOWNLOAD: THE COOL QUEST – GOD – HERE]

Although the rapper has aspirations of grandeur and the swagger to follow, he still has room to grow. On some tracks he seems to struggle to define his voice and is still developing flow schemes. That being said, his intelligence comes crashing through in waves and his rhymes have shades that are distinctly New York. The combination of influences helps paint this project with a broad brush of influences. West coast vibes laced with New York braggadocio and a voice that lies somewhere in between. Sometimes the missing ingredient is only time.

There’s a theme throughout ‘God’, and you need to make sure you catch on. The Cool Quest borrows from the best with his sampling and production, and puts in work to stand toe to toe with the classics. Cool takes the recognizable and respectable songs from some modern heads and manipulates them to leave his distinct fingerprint. He’s long claimed his place next to the critically acclaimed, and he makes it apparent that’s no joke with his words and styles. It takes a bold man to stand beside a mixtape titled ‘God’ and The Cool Quest might be the next to make the ascension.

[DL HERE]

On a mixtape laced with quality tracks, there are a few that really stood out as a cut above the rest. “Dalai Lama” has the juice, the swag, the soul, whatever you want to call it. The Chance sample was perfectly on point and the flow was golden from start to finish. “Top of the Hill” and “Mother” came from a place of pain. Cool speaks with wisdom and understanding beyond his years and uses his ‘broken home blues’ to leave his listeners with an open letter to his upbringing. “Uptown Freestyle” is another lyrical banger and “Good Lookin” puts his words on par with the best out now. From start to finish, ‘God’ is a solid, solid offering. If a you can make it off a mixtape, then someone look towards The Cool Quest for the next up. An artist that deserves more spin, respect where its due.

New Music: The Cool Quest – Death of YOLO (feat. Joey Bada$$)

cool quest

The Cool Quest is coming out of New York with a vision, a work ethic, and the talent to get there. He has a couple solid mixtape offerings under his belt and a bigger something something dropping very soon. The forthcoming project from The Cool Quest is titled “God” and is a free album/mixtape releasing October 16th. If this track is any premonition of what’s to come, then we’re in for something real nice. The Cool Quest is a bit further along his journey than his humbleness would allow him to suggest.

For this one, The Cool Quest sent a remix of the ever-popular Joey Bada$$ single “Death of YOLO”. Over the past year or so, Joey and his Pro Era crew have become something of a high-water mark among the pure New York hip hop scene. This remix does a lot to show that The Cool Quest not only has the chops to hang with that level, but the potential to blow by it. His flow has grown by leaps since I was first acquainted with his music, and it won’t be long before The Cool Quest is a quintessential name among the New York scene. On god, look out for ‘God’ coming 10/16.
