21 year old producer Anson was inspired by Mike Posner and he’s own remix and brought us I TOOK A PILL IN IBZIA. As soon as Anson heard @conormaynard cover to this, he knew he needed to add some tropical vibes to it. I’ve heard this track over and over, probably about 15 times. And I really like the vibes and the overall production is effortless. Shout out to Anson for this dope remix and his love for making software and eating bagels. Make sure you follow Anson on his Twitter Account @AnsonLongSeabra!

[CHICAGO, IL] After working over a year to finalize, That Man Santiago has recorded and mixed his latest project Nightlife Fifty-Five at Soundscape Studios. Embracing his environment, the inspiring upcoming artist from Chicago created an honest project on a person’s thoughts before and after hitting the night life in their city. The ambience of Nightlife Fifty-Five definitely provides those night vibes.
According to That Man Santiago “During the length of the tape I travel between thoughts of “turning up” and not worrying about the consequences, to thinking about the repercussions of my actions. The tape touches upon the idea that we are all filled with contradictions; however those contradictions are what help us learn and grow as people.” Now let’s take a chill pill and ride out with my review on That Man Santiago’s project Nightlife Fifty-Five. I’ll be discussing my favorites off the eleven track project. Which are:
[NIGHTLIFE] Where we start off with this track, if feels like you’ve been dancing at the club, already about 2:30am. The music sets a seductive vibe while That Man Santiago sets the mood for his club banger, while he’s talking to the girl he wants to take home.
[SNOW TRACKS] At the beginning of the track we get the weather news report that discuss the heavy snow that we’ll be arriving throughout the night, expected 10 feet of snow. Too cold to go outside and too much snow to deal with. That Man Santiago lets you know what he’s up to on this winter track.
[WHAT DO YOU KNOW] On this track That Man Santiago gets a bit rough when he finds out someone’s talking when they don’t know nothing about him. He’ll laugh it off at the beginning but if it persists he’s going to have to handle his.
[SOME DAYS] I feel that if you’re dealing with a relationship that you find yourself wanting to leave them, fix things, walk away, or stay forever. The emotions of trying to get yourself together and your significant other trying to do the same, but yet the balance may not be right. It’s either work things out or have it all come to an end, but will that day be today?
[OCARINA] At times it feels best to get with the past, with something that’s familiar. But according to time you just can’t. It’s all about moving forward and staying focus. But it seems to be That Man Santiago is getting distracted by Ocarina. I really felt as if she was real, so I had to ask and look what I found out:
NikkiSiixx: Who’s Ocarina?
That Man Santiago: Ocarina is more of a metaphore than a person. Its based of the game “Ocarina of Time” from Zelda lol. In the game, the Ocarina was a flute that could make a person travel through time. In the song, “Ocarina” stands for me wanting to go back in time and fix things I’ve done. But towards the end of the song, during the second verse, I realize that you can’t move forward when you’re chasing the past.
[REASON (BONUS)] This track actually surprised me considering the overall sound from the previous songs. Surprised me in a very good way. I like how diverse That Man Santiago demonstrates he’s styles and how melodic he can become. And what a romantic! This track is meant for the ladies. This would have to be my favorite track off the entire project.
This concludes my project review on Nightlife Fifty-Five with hip-hop artist That Man Santiago. The project exhibits feelings of emotions when it comes to some affairs that take place at night. It’s kinda like people get influence by the night life and dealing with those problems in the morning. I find the project to have a great story to tell and great listens.
What a way to bring together hip-hop and comics with what Co-creator/Executive Producer Mikel.M from Toronto Canada and Producer/Artist Xia-Dawn from Miami, FL did on their collaborative mixtape called SAMURAI SHIN VS XIA-DAWN. When you get your free download of Samurai Shin VS Xia-Dawn you get two new comic strips from “Samurai Shin” Episode 1 Web Comic Book. The mixtape also features from P.Soul, Kuro Silence, Mikel.M, Tripstyle, AJB4 & Voice Over Actor “LeQan Bennett”. Music inspired by comics and anime, my favorite elements to combine on a project.
Samurai Shin is inspired from two anime shows like Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai, with main characters Amir and Keith. Mikel.M will be writing out the comic and talented artist Ivan Earl Aguilar from the Philippines will be working on the art. With Xia-Dawn being a fan of anime and hip-hop he couldn’t miss out the opportunity to work on this project.
The seven track mixtape brings us some instrumentals and some dope tracks. With my review, I’ll be going over which ones are my favorites. They are: Brand New Day, Combat, Samurai Shin, All Flows Reach Out, and I Be That.
[BRAND NEW DAY] This track really captured my attention, reason why because if I was a lyricist or femcee I would of taken this beat and make a hit with it. Xia-Dawn executed the beat perfectly.
[COMBAT] I find this instrumental to be so motivating. It also reminds me of a Quentin Tarantino film. Seriously! You can’t tell me no. And a bit of Mortal Kombat inspiration with those “fight” and “finish him” being said throughout the track.
[SAMURAI SHIN] I really like how grimy/street style with this track, it even sounds like we’re in a cypher with Tripstyle. His flow is classic. Definitely represents the essence of 90’s hip-hop.
[ALL FLOWS REACH OUT (A.F.R.O)] To put into words how I feel about this track, it’s what I liked to call “groovy, baby”. I love the smooth vibes produced by Kuro Silence. This instrumental brings a lot of positive energy. I’ll definitely play this at a party for sure.
[I BE THAT (SAMURAI)] AJB4 takes Samurai Shin’s story to life with his track that hits topic from the comic. You gotta be careful who you’re messing with cause they can easily take your life especially if they’re a Samurai.
This concludes my project review on Samurai Shin VS Xia-Dawn. The 7 track mixtape really provides a fun time while still embracing hip-hop and anime. While listening to the project look at the comic strips provided. You can feel this music really coming out from the sketches. Love the art of music and in the arts.
Making his debut on NikkiSiixx.com Roy The Savage with his latest single E.N.Y (SLOWdown Gentrification). The powerful message Roy The Savage confidently expresses his thoughts on the massive rezoning process that’s happening in his neighborhood, East New York. If you’re not familiar with Gentrification is, SOUTH PARK makes it clear on their episode “The City Part of Town”. It’s insane because gentrification is also happening here in Miami, such as the extremely ARTSY Wynwood.
Roy The Savage raps in English and a little bit of Spanish, he presents his roots from his Dominican household. His style has been shaped by the golden era of hip-hop of the 1990’s and NY’s greats. Roy dedicates himself to his community by running projects that help young people in his neighborhood get internships. His main goal is to travel the world, play music, connect with people, promote peace, and spread love. Kris J decided to end 2015 with the feel good record “One Time” produced by his in-house engineer, Avery Mcrae. The Atlanta based artist is currently preparing to release his forthcoming album The A.R.T Project (All Real Thoughts) and will be releasing a single every monday until then. This song has Kris J rapping while melodically harmonizing in the background. He talks about coming up as artist to being able to slide in your girl. I enjoyed the braggadocios lyrics that he used to express himself on this joint and look forward to hearing more.
I did this last year, and earlier this week I took a shit on rap journalists by critiquing my own picks. Now, here’s to hoping I — and these artists — fare better in 2016! Send your hate to @AWKWORDrap or info@AWKWORDrap.com. – AWK
Busy is his best friend — and it ain’t hard to tell, as he racks up the appearances. Here’s to hoping Silent Knight’s buzz finally catches up to his work ethic, and talent. I had a hard time picking my favorites from him in 2015.
Clearly I’m a fan, since I recruited the fellow bearded Jew for last year’s NYC remix of my hit World View single “Go!”. The XXL Break alum has the hipster niche on lock, with steady love streaming in from the MISHKA, Noisey, Mass Appeal and Complex collectives. But it’s his confidence, his consistency, and his KIDS-era aesthetic that may propel him (and his ICK crew) to new heights in 2016.
Speaking of consistency… From the art he creates for each single he drops to the quality of HIS production on each of his songs to the catchy hooks and undeniably witty lyricism, Russ is one of those artists who seems destined for stardom, if he’s interested. This guy epitomizes prolific. He raps — a lot — about the magazines and the labels, and not giving a fuck. But let’s see what happens. Every record he uploads to Audiomack gets immediate love and stays trending until he unleashes his next one.
HD Been Dope
This guy’s still a bit of a sleeper. He’s young, unsigned, and another so-called backpacker emcee out of Brooklyn. But he’s caught the attention of The DJ Booth, offering up a freestyle for two of their video series, one solo and one alongside Maffew Ragazino, Kirk Knight, Emilio Rojas and Black Dave; and, dude’s done a million shows already. Not to mention, his contribution to DJ J Hart’s Passport EP was one of my top-three favorites on that top-three album of 2015. I expect great things from this kid, even if he’s not a Bada$$.
This young man loves and lives Hip Hop. He’s that cat who always had headphones on, kept to himself, and worshiped real emcees. He stayed up late, scribbling in his notebook, hoping to one day present his skills to someone like the great R.A. The Rugged Man. And then, he did. His rap name, a la GURU, stands for All Flows Reach Out. And if you’ve heard one of his freestyles, you know he can rap. Can’t say I love his RECORDS, yet. And he doesn’t exactly have the curb appeal to blow like Timberlake. But with more polishing (perhaps even than RA can provide), A-F-R-O can make a major dent on the indie Hip Hop scene, even as early as 2016.
Hus Kingpin, Smoovth, Rozewood and Marvelous Mag; and Conway and Westside Gunn
Sure, it may seem a little odd (if you haven’t been following my monthly playlists for Gonzombies.com) that I, ‘Mr. Protest Music’ himself, would be a proponent of this new wave of street music, but the massive amount of output from this group of affiliated ‘New New Yorkers’ (no Troy Ave) is as Hip Hop as any of the political anthems Jasiri X and I create. The streets birthed Hip Hop, and nobody does the gritty with more gusto. The beat selection, the searing wit, the wordplay, and the wiseguy mannerisms keep me head nodding and feeling untouchable. That’s what rap music can do for you. And nobody right now does it better than these guys. Mark my words: 2016 is the year The Winners and Griselda Records go global. Shoutout my mans, Big Ghost.
You may not have heard of them, but OkayAfrica and Noisey have. David Banner has. I have. And after a May 2015 tour, Europe has. They scared the shit out of the South African establishment with one music video, and it was lovely. Get next, and maybe you’ll catch me working with them before it’s too late to say you were still one of the first.
I think the first person I saw publicly mention the importance of album art was Nathan Slavik aka Refined Hype of DJ Booth (and I listened). In the case of a new artist, or an artist of whom you haven’t heard, it is definitely true. I caught wind of Gary while curating one of my Gonzombies playlists and, after doing a little research and discovering the consistency in his presentation to the public, decided more time should be lent to giving his music a sincere and thorough listen — and that, up-and-coming artists, is how you end up on a year-end list like this. Off the strength of his ‘catchiest song of the month‘ alone, the cold man may not have made the top 10, but his other two equally icy singles were enough to seal it.
“The Late Pass” represents a pass to all those who are late and unaware of the upcoming talent and new trendsetters in indie culture. The Late Pass is a traveling series that’s a cutting-edge, progressive, new – age event experience integrating indie music, product & lifestyle branding. The event (party/performance) takes place in various venues throughout the country that lends to the feel of authentic indie music culture.
The Late Pass caters to the experience of a raw and organic feel transformed into an indie DIY party/show. “The Late Pass” takes place in multiple markets including Illinois, Michigan, Arizona, Missouri, Iowa City, Miami, NYC and more. Major “Indie” artist Mic Terror (Treated Crew founder), and Savemoney’s Brian Fresco, alongside Roy French, & DJ Earn Money, have been featured on major blogs including Complex.com, Pitchfork.com, DjBooth.net, TheFader.com, Noisey, and many more.
With all the music glorifying the “trap” and its associated daily activities, one may forget that the despair of being in it is very real and every person is looking for a way out. For Toronto up and comer PRICE, a passport and visa symbolizes the escape that he is searching for.
In his words, “I wrote this record with a lot of things in mind. Where I’m at right now in Toronto is a war zone in its own right and being born in a country that refugees are trying to find safety in drew a clear picture for me. Regardless of my passport, I share an understanding with these people,” he says. “Though our stories are incomparable in severity, they do share a synergy. All I ever needed was a visa to get me out of the Grove – moving back to Toronto showed me how important that was.” The central theme of the track is expansion and growth, Price uses a visa as the tool to accomplish both. The track was produced by RUNWAY and was the first single off of his EP Departure that was released last December.
[MIAMI, FLORIDA] After the success of his debut album Around Midnight, Art Morera has something ready for the listeners for the new year. And it’s the Afterglow EP, the nine track project solely produced by long time collaborator Nixon. Go on the journey with Art Morera, while he sets to motivate and inspire you to and make your own adventure. Check out the dope coverart of Art’s dog Morty who has his head out the window. This represents the joy you find whether you’re going through obstacles that happen to come your way. The Afterglow EP features Royce Rizzy from Privateclub and Miami Artist Ramon Revere. I’ll be reviewing Afterglow with a more in-depth in an upcoming EP Review, stay tuned and don’t forget to download!
[LOS ANGELES] Making his debut on NikkiSiixx.com, the upcoming Arizona native emcee/singer Chad Michael has released his EP Rain. The six track collection of songs portray a compelling story-line from a man pursing his dreams. During 2014-2015, Chad Michael went to college and moved to Southern California to make a career in music.
Going through the experiences he endured and lesson’s learned, Chad Michael wanted to express this on the Rain EP. All produced by Oregon Producer Emotion Beats. They were able to work together and really give the feel of rain fall, because of the records up and downs. Throughout the 25 minute journey, how can you not relate to Chad Michael. My favorite tracks of the Rain Ep are Evolution, Different, Weekend Love, and Rain. Here’s what I thought about my favorite tracks:
EVOLUTION is a track that shows off Chad Michael’s verbal capabilities! By showing us how fast and creative his lyricism can be. Considering this is the first track off the EP and the first song I hear from Chad Michael, this is definitely a great introduction. He lets the listener know the bullshit he’s been through and what he’s doing to prevail in his music career. Dope flow!
DIFFERENT is a track where Chad Michael expresses his time growing up in Arizona and making the big move to California. Retouching his roots Chad realizes things change and things will become different. Visual Directors Danny Gauthier and Chad M. Arechiga bring Chad Michael’s music video to his first single DIFFERENT.
WEEKEND LOVE here’s a track where Chad Michael becomes a hopeless romantic. When needing love you just have to take it slow or do what just feels right. But due to his career and the long distance, the commitment just doesn’t feel right. With what the entertainment industry is trying to show the artist, that the most important thing is getting money and fucking bitches. Messes with the mind, but not the heart.
RAIN I find this track to be very poetic with a heavy introspective perspective. With the simple production, it really makes you concentrate with what Chad Michael’s had to say. The twenty-four year old artist who has potential in making his mark in the hip-hop scene. RAIN also shows Chad’s melodic and soulful side to his music.
Chad uses ‘Rain’ as an opportunity to continue to explore and refine his burgeoning mixture of sounds. Whether crooning softly to an old flame or attempting to navigate the difficulty of societal pressures, the young artist’s intelligence, raw ability, and passion shine
With the beginning of the year underway, Chad Michael is expected to have collaborations with established artists and some new music videos as well! Be on the lookout for more content and take a listen to the Rain Ep.
[ATLANTA, GEORGIA] For an artist it might be difficult to obtain your own beats to bring your words to life. So you gotta take matters into your own hands. For Sage BLOke, better known as SgBlk has embrace the production side to music and has created a beat tape entitled huez. The six track beat tape is definitely a piece of art. The vibes of the project presents itself, like the sounds are painting a vivid picture with various colors.
According to SgBLk “This project takes on the concept that music infects emotions, but in fact it can provide a gateway to images that normally can’t be seen in everyday life. Colors and music go hand and hand; they both express moods and give a sense of individuality“. He also added a sampled voice that makes his way through the tape and it really fits in, he says some pretty enlightening stuff. As vivid hue sounds it can keep your attention through it’s 11 minute 45 second journey of SgBLk perception of huez through sound.
