EP Review: Cal Mobley x Dubby – The Climb

the climb cover art

After we saw the visual to Cal Mobley x Dubby’s ANTE MERIDIEM, we finally get the collaborative EP called The Climb. With The Team Loko Movement they’ve been gaining momentum over the past year when they were releasing a handful of projects by Cal Mobley and Dubby. The chemistry between both artist really developed a certain sound/vibe that it was hard not to stop. It just seemed to make sense to unite on a joint project before dropping their biggest projects to date such as Cal Mobley’s “Medicine for Monsters” and Dubby’s with the “Heart & Havoc EP”. This time joining their talents on The Climb EP. I’ll be reviewing my favorite tracks off the project.

dubby cal mobley[THE CLIMB] Whenever anyone sets goals for themselves, they’ll be times it feels the climb to the top is brutal and they’ll be people trying to stop you move forward. Even people who you think are your friends, and find a way to backstab you while you’re on your way up. On this track the guys shows us they’re willing to surpass these obstacles. Produced by Runaway Muzic. I really like how Dubby is embracing his melodies and bringing his vocals to life. Cal Mobley takes over the second half of the track, and I’m diggin’ his flow.

[ANTE MERIDIEM] is that late night tip type of song, when partying all night and see when morning comes up. The house party with masks was pretty dope! Covering their identities and staying true to their niche. Love the shots and effects filmed by Bradley Atom, it fits perfectly with production by PØWELL. This would have to be one of m favorite tracks on the The Climb EP.

inertia cover[INERTIA] This track really embraces the whole dance/dub vibe with futuristic sounds by Canis Major. Speaking of futuristic Cal Mobley even has a line reference to a space ship. Cal’s flow is a bit slowed down but here’s where you can fully imagine what he has to say. Dubby’s hook and bridge is on point and makes me want to press repeat two times! Maybe, a little more. Definitely a fun track! I can see myself dance to this one.

[TRACKLISTING]
1. The Climb – Dubby (0:00-2:51) Cal (2:51-end)
2. Ante Meridiem – Cal (Hook 1 and 2 & Verse 1) Dubby (verse 2 and hook 3)
3. Whip Game – Dubby (Hook) Cal (Verse 1 & 2)
4. Inertia- Dubby (Hook and bridge) Cal (Verse 1 & 2)

cal mobley x hubby

The Climb features some select producers including Canis Major who will be reoccurring on Dubby’s H&H project, Runaway Muzic, The Cratez, and Powell. All Recording, Mixing, & Mastering done by Jason Shaffer (www.fulltiltrecording.com).

This concludes my review on The Climb EP by Cal Mobley x Dubby! Both artist display signs of growth and can’t wait to see what the TEAM LOKO MOVEMENT will be debuting next!

Audio: Zulu Soul – Eutrepics

EutrepicsArtwork

[NEW JERSEY/ST.LOUIS] Producers/Rappers Zulu Soul and DJ Fishbulb create a hip-hop duo. They created this track called EUTREPICS. This track was also was the first winner of the first Submission Sunday on HipHopSpeakeasy.com. EUTREPICS is a jazzy production by DJ Fishbulb and the calm delivery was from Zulu Soul. His flow is something to get use to, but he is able to deliver his message.

“What makes us unique is our lack of influence. We come from a place where very few people make the kind of music we make so everything we make is completely organic. The influences we do have are based on the music we seek out ourselves. We make honest music from our own perspective and we feel this is what makes people connect with music”. – Zulu Soul

POLL: Who Sampled It Better? Kingdom Hearts Utada Hikaru – Sanctuary

poll who sampled it better kh01

Anything can inspire a beat, you just need the right sample. Samples can be quotes from a movie, soundtracks to video games and audio of passed interviews. Its common to have a few people inspire by the same thing. I decided to create a Poll to who sampled it better. This session we’ll concentrate on Kingdom Hearts II Intro with Utada Hikaru Sanctuary. Here’s how the intro looks and sounds like:

Alright, so you have the feel for Utada Hikaru Sanctuary. I’m a huge fan of the Kingdom Hearts Series and I love this song truly. What’s even better, I was able to find four artist who used this sample one way or another in their track. I was pretty impressed by the different versions of this track. Here are your options of Who Sampled It Better?

JAYOMEGA – SANCTUARY PART II – PRODUCED BY SYER

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 7.23.06 PM Jayomega was inspired by the original song when he first heard it on the opening credits of “Kingdom Hearts 2”, a popular Disney inspired RPG that released for Playstation 2 in 2005. Jayomega originally released “Sanctuary” on his mixtape “Ready Set Go 2: Going Going Gone“, but could never fully promote it as it violated some copyright laws. Jayomega sent me the track and advised him he should really get to remaking that beat to generate the song. But instead of using the same lyrics, he went in. Jayomega’s flow meets the pace to Syer amazing production skills.

BLIZZI BOI – SANCTUARY || PRODUCED BY: UNKNOWN

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 8.17.31 PMBlizzi Boi adds to his Oceanic Music collection his track Sanctuary. This beat was sent to Blizzi Boi from a female vocalist. She wanted him to write the song and set the tone. Being a huge fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, he couldn’t turn it down. Oceanic Music sets a smooth fantasy almost trap r&b type of love song. Inspired by ocean life, R&B music and fantasy. Blizzi liked it so much he actually ended up completing the song. One thing I really like was how he started the track.. “I feel alive, when I’m with you! Just want to be inside your sanctuary”. Its pretty dope he flipped Utada’s line and made it his own.

XV – WHEN WE’RE DONE || PRODUCED BY: SEVEN

XVEven though this track was created over 4 years ago, XV brings us his version of Sanctuary. I noticed there wasn’t any reference to Kingdom Hearts, but there is some type of reference I believe in his hook. See for yourself: “Not everybody lives, but everybody dies. So while a nigga here, I’m shooting for the sky. Landing on the moon, walking on the sun. Taking over the game, give it back when we done“. It’s more of an inspirational and motivational track. Titled WHEN WE’RE DONE, this track was the first leak off his Zero Heroes EP. Produced By Seven, I really like how that song inspired him to make this beat.

FRENCH MONTANA – SANCTUARY || PRODUCED BY: BLACK METAPHOR

french montana - mac and cheese 3We even have a mainstream artist using this sample. French Montana SANCTUARY off of his mixtape MAC & CHEESE 3. I find it doubt that Frech Montana mentions this in his track: “You know what I mean? Its sanctuary baby. You know they say it’s the game of life and you don’t get to play it twice.” I feel this can be a reference to the Kingdom Hearts 2 since he mention a game and playing it twice. Who didn’t play that game twice. Black Metaphor is the producer on the beat. I like how he was able to maintain the sample at the beginning of the track, which really set the overall tone. Thought it was cool how melodic French became with the hook and bridges. French emphasizes the growth of his network, and the capabilities to splurge it, living that good life.

kingdom hearts

So here comes your job! Please pick one of your favorite versions of Utada Hikaru’s Sanctuary off of one of the biggest games in video game history Kingdom Hearts II. You need to decided from Jayomega, Blizzi Boi, XV, and Frech Montana. In 3 weeks I’ll announce who was your favorite!

Who Sampled It Best?
Jayomega – Sanctuary Part II
Blizzi Boi – Sanctuary
XV – When We’re Done
French Montana – Sanctuary

Audio: JR & PH7 – Barriers featuring Eric Biddines

jr and ph7 eric biddines

x4eOaax_JR & PH7 are producers from Germany, who are at it again. With their new track titled BARRIERS, this time featuring West Palm Beach Artist Eric Biddines with his smooth lyrics and melodies. I love how the producers collaborated with an artist from the states, this shows a bridge being build between musicians on an international level. BARRIES is from the upcoming JR & PH7 EP ‘Noir’. You can now Pre-Order ‘Noir’ via iTunes, it is set for it’s official release on August 28th on digital and vinyl.

Artist Advice: How To Approach A Producer With Or Without A Budget

image

For this article, I asked my Instagram followers for ideas for the next artist advice column on my site. What would they like for me to write about. I based my topic off their suggestions regarding promotions, blogs, anything related to music. This week I chose – @illtalbeats with his comment: “Do an article on how rappers should approach producers for beats (Especially for artists that don’t have a budget) lol” || Thanks illtalbeats this is the perfect topic! Here’s what I have to say about approaching producers with or without a budget.

I know for an up and coming artist it can get really pricey in order to put a really solid project together. From the cost to purchasing a beat, to paying an engineer to mix and master it, hiring a graphic designer to create the cover art work, acquiring the licensing, trademarking and copyright. Placing your first order on printing physical cd’s, which need packaging sleeves or cases (plus the graphic designer to create the overall look). Creating and stocking up on merchandise, and then online promotional campaigns you get from official websites that support you’re kind of music. Phew! Remain Calm.

Key is to be able to manage your finances to the best of you’re capabilities. If you need to save, you save. But first things first… when it comes to creating any music content you need to find the heart to you’re song. This is where the producer plays a huge part. Because if the producer is a talented individual, who is capable of multiple genres or a new sound you’ve been searching for. Then your song comes to life, with a heartbeat to the music.

Lately, I find the best ways to find a producer is through Soundcloud.com, Twitter, and even Instagram. On Soundcloud, beat makers upload their beats and even instrumentals they’ve been working on. In hopes to finding an artist who will be interested in collaborating on something new. Networking is key when it comes to building new relationships. Comment, Share, and Like what you hear. Showing support goes a long way, especially when you’re really feeling the music.

Best ways to search for producers are through hashtags! Here’s where the producer who puts #Producers #FreeBeats #HipHop #Music while appear before your eyes. Don’t forget to follow them and become a familiar face. Once that, obtain their contact info; usually an email address, phone number, or straight through a direct message. Let em’ know how you’re interested in working together and how can it be possible? Here’s where it comes to whether or not your wallet comes into play.

Producers work in many different ways when it comes to selling their beats. They can set a price for the track, lease the beat, or accept royalties off any sells/plays. When a producer sets a rate for a beat, you have to understand and respect it. You can either pay in full or even make payments in order to own the music, rightfully. I’ve heard producers leasing beats for a certain amount of time. But this might be helpful for an artist who might not be completely sure if music is the right path for them. But hey! Reader, right now if you’re an artist who knows for sure what they want and their going to work as hard as possible to make it happen… Continue to read Right? Cool!

So, next option is accepting royalties. Royalties occur when you’re content is registered with BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC. For example, BMI has connects with licensed holders who use/play your music; such as radio stations, television stations, clubs, and restaurants. These license holders maintain a monitoring system that provides licensing fees in order to get you paid. 50% of a song is credited to the songwriter and the remaining 50% is left to the publisher.

Once you’ve selected the beat, picked which type of purchase choice, then it’s time to make a payment. When making a transaction, make sure the producer sends you an invoice for exactly what you agreed upon. This will guarantee this service or ownership of the beat you wanted to purchase. You also have to take into consideration any fees that may take place such as Paypal. You should pay to make the difference so the producer fully gets the amount he/she asked for.

Say, you don’t have a budget. You’re an independent artist and all funds goes towards maintaining your life and your living situation. This is where networking and friendships come into play. I would say search for a producer who’s starting just like yourself and you feel a common base in music and interests. Proclaiming how you really want to work with them on a small scale when it comes to collaborating on music. You two can select a certain amount of beats and then you come with the verses, and then a project is born. A free project, this will help promote both parties. With heavy online promotion, you’re definitely guarantee to gain more fans this way. Now the producers followers, friends, associates become familiar with you as an artist as well.

Also, during the recording process you should have the producer present. Build together on the sound the project will have and hook them up with their favorite goodies as well during the session. Drinks, Snacks, Coffee, and even some funny smokes. Positive Vibes = Amazing Music. After working together.. when you’re in works on any future project, they might possibly hook you up with free beats.

FREE BEATS?? Yeah, it’s possible. When you network and play your cards right. But don’t forget to give credit to the guy who created the song that inspired the lyrics to the best song you’ve ever written. It takes from hours till days and even months to get a beat sounding the way it does. Take into consideration, they deserve the credit too. Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 2.52.50 PM I’ve received music submissions from the artist himself and he did not give credit and not even mention the producer at all. How rude is that? The producer should always get mentioned on anything related to the track/project promotion, getting tagged in every photo of the cover art, and getting notified when the track gets featured on a popular website. This also will benefit the artist because now you have an extra individual who will help promote it because they are involved. This concludes my take on how artist should handle approaching producers on purchasing their beats and even sometimes working without a budget. Any comments or suggestions, provide them below.

New Music: Psymun – Lobby Music featuring K. Raydio

psymun

psymun

Twin city producer Psymun brings us his brand new single entitled Lobby Music featuring K. Raydio. This single comes from his upcoming album, SSV3 entirely produced by himself and fellow beat maker Damacha. The down tempo, soothing R&B record sends you into a state of ultimate relaxation speaking about a break-up & using alcohol to mend the pain.

I thought this record was absolutely amazing! The transition of the beat is phenomenal and stands strong as just an instrumental. Hearing K. Raydio’s vocals & content on the track though is what took it to a whole other level for me. Its made me really fall in love with the record. She speaks about someone she once adored who she’s no longer with and being one alcohol sip away from letting them back into her life. Psymun and Damacha released this project on May 2nd which only features artists from their hometown, Minneapolis. I definitely think he brings a new refreshing sound to the table. Someone who should be on everyone’s radar. We’re really looking forward to the rest of this album and any new music he may have for us in the future.

“I’m just a sip away, from letting you back in, I’m just a sip away aye, Just a sip away”
