That’s right, there’s going to be a new Ghostbusters movie in 2016. The 1984 cult classic starring Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver still has a large following today – many celebrating its anniversary in the same way as classics like the Big Lebowski and Pulp Fiction.
While the news of the new Ghostbusters film dropped last year, with the Cinema Blend being one of the first news outlets to break the story, it’s only now that fans are beginning to get excited by the prospect of the new movie.
Although, not everything is as we would expect with the new release. As Cinema Blend documented, the new movie will feature an all-female cast. However, while this presents a significant shift from the 1984 original, Ackroyd seems excited by the prospect of a new and vibrant cast including Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. Ackroyd had the following to say:
“The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy. My great grandfather, Dr. Sam Aykroyd, the original Ghostbuster, was a man who empowered women in his day and this is a beautiful development in the legacy of our family business.”
The Sony Pictures production will be directed by the acclaimed Fletcher Moules, who was responsible for the extremely popular Clash of Clans advertisements, among other notable projects. Helping out Moules, will be the co-creator of Ghostbusters, Ivan Reitman according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will be released in July, and as Variety reported, the industry is expecting Ghostbusters to be one of the biggest grossing films of 2016 alongside many of the DC and Marvel releases due this year. With marketing efforts already in full flow, merchandise has started popping up everywhere. From original t-shirts, posters and video games, to leading brands such as Gala Bingo , who have started running Ghostbuster slot games to tap into the popularity of the brand in the lead-up to the release.
With a fledgling cast, and director at the helm of this reboot, the film also has its naysayers. What can we expect? It’s unclear until we finally get to see this unique take on the 1984 classic. In the meantime, watch the official trailer here:
