[Video Games]: King of Fighters XIV – First Impression

KOF XIV Screen 1

The 14th installment of SNK’s King of Fighters franchise is set to drop on August 23, 2016. Other than a few lucky pro players, not a lot of people have had hands on time with this game so I was really excited when I heard there was a demo available on the Playstation Network. People seem to be anticipating this games release, so I got together with a friend to play a couple versus matches and see what KOF XIV is hittin’ for.

I was surprised when I saw that there were 7 characters available for me to play around with. I immediately gravitated towards Mai and Shun’ei and fell in love with how fast and technical the game is. If you don’t know much about KOF XIV and would like to see it in action, check out the video above for some uninterrupted gameplay along with commentary.

KOF XIV Screen 2

This game is going to have a pretty huge roster size when it finally releases. That’s pretty refreshing given the current trend of games coming out with only a few characters at launch before more are added as DLC.

I’ll definitely be picking this game up when it drops. For more on fighting games, or just to see whatever i’m playing, follow me on Twitter @SpiegelDFE.

[GAMER TIME] – Star Ocean V: Integrity and Faithlessness

Screen 1

In the interest of full disclosure, let it be known that I absolutely love the Star Ocean series. Star Ocean III: Til the End of Time is one of my top 10 favorite games ever, so I originally had no intention of being objective with this review. Other media had panned this game severely and I felt like it was up to me to defend it and big up its good qualities.

But then I actually played the game.

After the first five minutes, I didn’t feel that immediate engagement factor. Star Ocean V: Integrity and Faithlessness just kinda starts and before too long you’re off adventuring trying to save your hometown from bandits or something. While that may be refreshing for some JRPG players who are sick of games in the the genre taking upwards of 15 hours to get to the good part, that quickened pace comes at the sacrifice of the story’s length. You can complete the main game in a little over 20 hours, so if you were looking for a sprawling space epic, this is the wrong place.

Runnin' through these pretty towns with my woes

Runnin’ through these pretty towns with my woes

The game does have good qualities about it though, and mainstream critics have been way too harsh. Battles are fun, the English voice acting is really good, and it’s beautiful to look at. However, this isn’t the triumphant return of a much beloved series. Not even a little. I outlined the good parts of the game in my video review above so definitely check that out for more in depth analysis on what Star Ocean V does and doesn’t do.

The cancel system and customizable move-sets keep combat pretty entertaining.

[Gamer Time] – Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst

Mirrors Edge Screen 1

The original Mirror’s Edge was something of a cult classic so the fact that the long awaited sequel actually came out is something of an accomplishment already. The way it uses next gen technology to improve on the mechanics that made the first game unique should net developer DICE considerable props.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst isn’t just a re-tread of old ideas but, while trying to expand on its formula, the game unfortunately experiences a few stumbles. The addition of an open world to explore seems like it fits right in with modern gaming trends, but over-reliance on timed side missions take away from what could have been a well paced story.

First day out the feds.

First day out the feds.

The game world looks beautiful and very interesting. However, and i’m not sure if i’m in the minority here, the amount of bright white surfaces found all over the city of glass gave me a bit of a headache and made me wish I had sunglasses. Combat was a nice surprise in this game and is much improved from the first game. If you want to see it in motion, definitely make sure to check out the full video review embedded above.

How you gonna call for backup when I just turned your larynx to spaghetti?

How you gonna call for backup when I just turned your larynx to spaghetti?

Overall, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is pretty good but certain design choices hold it back. If you want to check out the song I mentioned at the beginning of the video, here’s a link. [Gamer Time] – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan

Screen 1

Platinum Games is known for dropping hits so, after hearing that they were picking up the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license, there was cause for celebration. Following on the heels of the excellent Transformers: Devastation (reviewed here) the game seemed poised for success.

Early footage made it look like it was going to mimic Transformers in a lot of ways. Something about how the characters moved and the way combos linked made it seem like the only difference was that the turtles didn’t transform. Luckily, that isn’t the case and this game has a unique style of its own. Action is fluid and fun, but there are points where you can tell Platinum Games was just working on too much stuff at once.

You ever ran up on a helicopter before?

You ever ran up on a helicopter before?

The usual Platinum Games polish is missing from this title and at times it was reminiscent of the studio’s notably lackluster Legend of Korra game. It’s easy to point the finger and say they didn’t try that hard since it’s just a quick cash-grab licensed title, but with how well their other licensed games have turned out, that would be wrong. Mutants in Manhattan definitely has a lot going for it so the initial negative reviews shouldn’t be taken as gospel.

You definitely want that Warp Dash on point for the boss fights.

[Video Games]: First Impression – Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven

Screen 1

If there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s video games based on anime. I don’t know what it’s been about the past year, but it feels like more anime games are getting demos which is super great for people who may not be quite sure if a particular title is worth taking a chance on. Such is the case, for me at least, with the latest game based on Jojo’s Bizarre adventure.

I’ve watched Jojo before, but I’m not super deep into it. However, people on Twitter always seem to be going bananas about it, so there must be something special about it. The above video is my first time every playing a Jojo game and, even with my limited knowledge of the anime it’s based on, I had a blast with it. Thanks to the demo, I can tell that there is a lot to this game and it won’t be something only the hardcore fans can appreciate.

So.. The dog has a Stand too? Like, the dog fights people? That's not your typical anime dog...

So.. The dog has a Stand too? Like, the dog fights people? That’s not your typical anime dog…

What surprised me the most about this demo was how it gives you a good grasp of this game’s cinematic presentation. Most demos and betas are happy to just put a multiplayer mode with a couple characters in front of you and say “go ham” which leaves you wondering about whether or not it can entertain you when you’re gaming solo. I got little snippets of the series’ humor and although I have yet to see Jotaro and Jean-Pierre in my JJBA viewing, I feel like i’ve known them for time.

All in all, it was a pretty good demo. For more anime/gaming content follow me on Twitter @SpiegelDFE and keep up with the latest in Geek Culture by staying on NikkiSiixx!

[Video Games]: First Impression – One Piece: Burning Blood

Screen 1

One Piece: Burning Blood is the latest game from Spike Chunsoft, the crew behind J-Stars Victory. It controls a lot like it’s predecessor, focusing less on crazy combos but trying to build hype moments through easy accessibility and flashy ultimate moves. I’m a pretty recent One Piece fan so i’m hesitant to grab the game for fear of spoilers, but it was so fun to play that depending what sort of single player offerings there are, I might just ramp up my viewing of the anime.

The above video is a quick match I played against one of my buddies after downloading the title to see what it was like. One Piece: Burning Blood comes out on May 31st in North America and is a perfect fit for fans of the anime who may not be into traditional/more complicated fighters.  Follow me on twitter to stay up on all the different games I’m playing for nikkisiixx.com.

Video Games: [First Impression] Overwatch Beta

Overwatch

It’s been an absolutely packed weekend for people who wanted to participate in betas. Overwatch, Doom and Battleborn were all simultaneously going on. With so many games and so little time, I had to pick what I really wanted to play and that ended up being Overwatch. Blizzard’s team-based shooter absolutely oozes personality and is a lot of fun to play. After trying a few of the characters, I decided that Widowmaker was my favorite so I took the footage I recorded of my playing as her and added a little commentary.

Overwatch drops on May 24, so check the video to see what I thought of the game in the meantime and make sure to follow me on twitter to stay up on all the different games I’m playing for nikkisiixx.com.

Video Games: [First Impression] Final Fantasy XV Platinum Demo

first impression smack talk ffxv spiegz

In what has to be the craziest plot twist in a minute, Final Fantasy XV ACTUALLY has a release date. The folks announced that the long awaited JRPG which has been in development since 2006 will be gracing our consoles on Septembber 30th 2016. While this is more of a second impression, since I played the Episode Duscae demo they put out a while ago, I feel this should still be a part of this series because it gives you a very different look at what the game has to offer.

Enjoy the commentary! Follow me on Twitter for more game related content and be sure to keep it locked to nikkisiixx.com

[GAMER TIME] – Pokken Tournament || Hosted by @SpiegelDFE

pokken-tournament-header

Looks like Nintendo fans have more than just Super Smash Bros. to give them their Pokemon fighting fix. Coming from a collaboration with Bandai Namco, Pokken tournament just might be the fighting game that Pokefans have been waiting for. If you grew up playing Pokemon on your Gameboy, then you remember the simple animations on the various moves. Pokken Tournament fully renders out these fantastic attacks and the aesthetics are sure to please new and old fans alike.

Pokken Screen 1

Machamp giving the the hands

You pick a trainer, you pick a partner Pokemon and you go on a journey to conquer the Ferrum league. The story isn’t nything outside of the typical Pokemon fare, but the story is not why we’re here. You make your trainer and there are a lot of customization options available for them through the use of in game money or by tapping any Amiibo figurines you might own.

Pokken Screen 3

Got my trainer swaggin’ hard

The fighting is fluid and does things differently from your typical fighting game. If you come into this playing like its Smash Bros. or Street Fighter then you’re in for a rude awakening. The moves have a feeling of weight and connection behind them which is very important to the genre. It feels very responsive when you’re handing out whoopins.k

Pokken Screen 2

Pikachu comin’ at ya from the top of the turnbuckle!

I had a lot of fun with Pokken tournament so make sure to check out the video above for more thoughts and see me go toe to toe with another trainer online in order to test my skills.

Another weekend, another Beta test. This time it was the stress test for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s multiplayer component. The thing I loved the most about it was how mobile your character is while you’re traversing the map. Definitely something to watch in the vid. Check out my thoughts!

GAMER TIME – Street Fighter V || Hosted by @SpiegelDFE

VS Screen

Capcom’s back at it again with the street fight, Street Fighter V  is the latest entry in Capcom’s highly competitive game series. There’s been an overhaul of the systems at work so people that come into Street Fighter V trying to do the same things that worked in Ultra Street Fighter IV are going to be slightly disappointed. The game has launched with an initial roster size of 16 and more characters are slated to come to the game post launch.

Throw screen

The fighting looks good and the combos are immensely satisfying to pull off. Versus mode is this game’s bread and butter and if you blink, you’ll have played 50 consecutive versus matches before you even know what happened.

Story Mode Screen

The game’s story is told through several short vignettes. The art style is neat and it’s kind of like a graphic novel where you get to beat people up every few pages. Much like the extra roster characters, an expanded story mode is in the works as a piece of future downloadable content. Watch the video for my full Gamer Time review.

GAMER TIME – Transformers: Devastation || Hosted By @SpiegelDFE

Splash

Coming from the folks over at Platinum Games, Transformers: Devastation is something like a shot of straight adrenaline to your Xbox One or Playstation 4. The game is a wild ride from start to finish and has some of the slickest action and most popping visuals I’ve seen in a really long time.

It features an addictive battle system that I couldn’t stop playing. I kept saying “just one more mission” and would end up playing at least another three or four.

Screen 2

The game is an absolute joy to play because of its gameplay variety. I can’t recall feeling bored while playing this game and I never felt that there was only one way to solve a problem in front of me.

GAMER TIME: Xenoblade Chronicles X || Hosted By @SpiegelDFE

Splash Page

Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U is a gigantic JRPG that’s gonna take days of your life from you if you choose to fully commit. The first Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii was an excellent breath of fresh air and this game aims to succeed it in every way.

Scenery

The environments are impressive and full of breath taking visuals and exhilarating combat. Monolithsoft has jammed an impressive amount of content onto the Wii U game disk. Just when you think you’ve found the coolest gear, you’ll stumble across a piece of armor so cool that you just HAVE to complete the set. The grind is addictive in this one.
