[COMICS] Samurai Shin Issue #1.5 Review

samurai shin 1.5 cover

I was able to obtain the official copy of Issue #1.5 of Samurai Shin. It’s expected to release on July 3rd via PeepGameComix. This issue is based on the Prelude to Samurai Shin Issue #1. Here’s what I thought about the comic:

16144639_10209408672792648_1283757428_nFrom my brief review for Issue #1, Amir Atsuko and Keith Masaru are young warriors eager to prove that they are worthy of the title as Samurai. Although the two of them share such similar back stories and goals, they never really liked each other. But unnecessary evil appears in their village… and a man with a bear mask.

Issue 1.5 provides you the story as to why Keith Masaru is the way he is. After receiving training from his father after losing out to Amir Atsuko at a tournament. Keith was set to better himself in order to beat Amir, in which Amir was a current student of Master Kenzo. Who actually trained Keith’s Dad Fuji Masaru when he was a child.

One thing I really like about the Samurai Shin series, is the detailed to the illustrations and the deepness to the story. Samurai Shin was created and written by Mikel Miles. In the prelude comic you see the illustrations stand out, especially when the images are in full color, really gives the characters some light, on how they would truly look like. Illustrations created by Harley Dela Cruz and Art + Cover by Sukma Agustriyana and Fhama Fauzi.

At the beginning of Samurai Shin you felt hesitant to Keith because he seemed like a self-center character. But in reality he’s fighting his own demons, and felt that Master Kenzo was really holding him back from his full potential. Throughout the comic you see how Keith began to learn the ways of improving his skill with the sword by his father’s teachings and training. And you see the bond grow between Keith and he his father as well. Until the climax of the story in which I won’t spoil here.

After reading the conclusion to the prelude, it just makes sense as to why Keith is so bitter. Once I reached to the suspenseful ending, it just goes to show Samurai Shin Issue #2 needs to get here sooner than later. I personally don’t want to detail how the comic leaves you on a cliff hanger you just have to read it for yourself. Stay tuned for an update to this post with the link to Samurai Shin 1.5 Prelude Comic, and might as well check out Issue #1.

When it comes to the style and imagery of a comic book. You start to wonder the back story of the creator. For the upcoming issue of Samurai Shin I decided to Interview illustrator Sukma Agustriyana, here’s what we discussed:

NIKKISIIXX: How was it working with the other illustrators and following Mike Miles vision with the project?
Sukma Agustriyana: it’s amazing experience… working with all team members is so much fun, they are all talented and Mikel was also clear with his vision that makes me more easier to visualize the artwork.

NIKKISIIXX: What inspires you when creating the images for Samurai Shin?
Sukma Agustriyana: some of my inspirations comes from anime and movies. Just like the first when i saw the previous samurai shin artwork, I suddenly think about afro samurai, and then more anime movies like “sword of the stranger”, “Samurai Champloo” and “Rurouni Kenshin”.

NIKKISIIXX: How was your experience contributing to xenopets :concurro & aldnoah zero Mangas?
Sukma Agustriyana: it was awesome.. at first I was little afraid of making mistakes because its the first comic I working on, but along the way I learned a lot of new things.

NIKKISIIXX: What do you think about the Samurai Shin Soundtrack? Which track is your favorite and why?
Sukma Agustriyana: its cool!, my favourite track is titled “past” by kuro silence its a nice calming tone, soothing and good instrumental.

NIKKISIIXX: If you were to create a character like yourself, what characteristics or powers will he have? And what would be his back story?
Sukma Agustriyana: i think i will create some shape shifting monster that can turn into anything he wants except his family, but from childhood he never met with his family members. and the story begin with meeting with one of the family members and adventure start with looking the rest of his family.

NIKKISIIXX: Anything you’ll like to share:
Sukma Agustriyana: as always.. “stay consistent and focused what are you doing, stay humble with everyone and keep learning from everything” 🙂
