Audio: ER305 – Back Door

backdoor

er305[LITTLE HAVANA MIAMI, FL] ER305 releases his latest installment to his #AnyGivenSundays series with BACK DOOR. ER305 expresses how he’s going to take over the rap scene and regardless of previous fallouts, he’s working hard on a different approach. Hard Crunk brought to you by Metro Boomin Producer. I feel ER305 is mean on this one. BACK DOOR serves as either a good introduction to anyone not familiar with ER’s music or a reintroduction to anyone who has been missing out on his Any Given Sundays campaign. ER305 is set to release his upcoming EP by next month. Be on the look out for more updates via ER305 social media accounts.

Music Video: The Lost Souls – “Ain’t Worried Bout’ Nun”

Screen Shot 2014-07-19 at 2.00.56 PM

Screen Shot 2014-07-19 at 2.00.56 PMWe have seen a lot of new, experimental New York rappers over the last few years gain national, and even global attention. A handful of Beast Coast artists are making some noise in hip-hop, such as the Pro Era collective, Flatbush Zombies, and The Underachievers. New York may arguably have the most interesting underground music scene right now, other than Chicago of course. You have rappers like Bobby Shmurda and Dillion Cooper, both coming out of New York.

Brooklyn hip-hop group, The Lost Souls have the potential to be next to blow up. These guys ride boom bap sounds effortlessly and typically spit over beats reminiscent of the “good ol’ days” in music. The Lost Souls are simply 90’s kids adding their own flavor to a sound and style that is constantly being innovated.  The set consists of a twins Fresh Costello and BG Fire and their producer NickFRSH. With their latest offering “Ain’t Worried Bout’ Nun” The Lost Souls share their focus and life lessons, all while flexing their lyrical ability and rapid flow. The visual shows the young MCs walking through their neighborhood and wild n’ out with friends.  Check it out below!

New Music: Wogz – Love & Commerce ft. Henny B

lovecommerce

The quality of the underground has evolved to a truly amazing level. The internet has gifted latent talent and ability with the tools and outlets to flourish. This track from Chicago soulster Wogz is a perfect example of this type of quality the internet can bring. Forged in modern technologies and culture, influenced by ages of soul and a myriad of genres.

“Love & Commerce” reflects Wogz’s classical interpretations of modern hip hop and rap culture. Aided by a beat of her own production, a killer verse from Henny B, and a voice that brings the feels to the most rugged of men, Wogz spins a story of an ill-advised passion. From this track it’s clear she stands as a woman who knows what she wants, when she wants it, and how.

Her gritty and undeniably feminine sensuality is on full display with “Love & Commerce”. She is a strong, independent force in the Chicago underground. Her music and creative presence brings a beautiful breath of fresh air to city marred by senseless violence and unrelenting thug personas. While this track stands alone as a gifted single from Wogz, her debut mixtape is due out this summer. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for Round Midnight Mixtape dropping sometime soon.

Music Video: Valley High – Let Me Get Em

valleyhigh

The Valley High boys are back in business with another banger. ‘Let Me Get Em’ is an ode to the bygone days of the vixens and classic gangsters our parents were raised on. The group has always possessed a classic hip-hop feel that has a certain maturity that’s beyond their collective years and it all comes through with this one. The old school smoking jackets, the classy broad showing the right amounts of skin, the Reservoir Dog’s vibes; all of it reeks of a master plan. Snow Rowe brought out his inner evil-genius for ‘Let Me Get Em’.

Valley High has been making some bigger moves lately out of Cincinnati. With the release of this video and their latest tape ‘The 90’s Tape’ they were nominated for two Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. For those of you that are unaware, the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky music scene flourishes in a myriad of genre’s. One of the more illustrious is the hip hop genre, where your boys came up a little short. All is not lost though, they’ve been rocking shows as far as Atlanta with their signature live style and gaining fans across the nation. 2014 is slated to be a big year for a lot of underground artists, but someone to keep your eye out for is Valley High. As eclectic as they are talented, the group has their sights set on the sky.

New Music: The Cool Quest – God (Mixtape)

god

god

The Cool Quest is on a search for just that, the cool, and so much more. A young emcee out of Brooklyn, Cool Quest is coming correct with his third full offering in the form of ‘God’. Never short on confidence, Cool has long claimed his stake alongside the modern heads of hip-hop through his always-entertaining Twitter. ‘God’ does a lot to bring some credibility to that statement. Don’t even take this blogger’s word for it; do yourself a favor and check out the tape. Even if the rhymes don’t stick, The Cool Quest makes it easy to find a silver lining in his production prowess and sample selection.

[DOWNLOAD: THE COOL QUEST – GOD – HERE]

Although the rapper has aspirations of grandeur and the swagger to follow, he still has room to grow. On some tracks he seems to struggle to define his voice and is still developing flow schemes. That being said, his intelligence comes crashing through in waves and his rhymes have shades that are distinctly New York. The combination of influences helps paint this project with a broad brush of influences. West coast vibes laced with New York braggadocio and a voice that lies somewhere in between. Sometimes the missing ingredient is only time.

There’s a theme throughout ‘God’, and you need to make sure you catch on. The Cool Quest borrows from the best with his sampling and production, and puts in work to stand toe to toe with the classics. Cool takes the recognizable and respectable songs from some modern heads and manipulates them to leave his distinct fingerprint. He’s long claimed his place next to the critically acclaimed, and he makes it apparent that’s no joke with his words and styles. It takes a bold man to stand beside a mixtape titled ‘God’ and The Cool Quest might be the next to make the ascension.

[DL HERE]

On a mixtape laced with quality tracks, there are a few that really stood out as a cut above the rest. “Dalai Lama” has the juice, the swag, the soul, whatever you want to call it. The Chance sample was perfectly on point and the flow was golden from start to finish. “Top of the Hill” and “Mother” came from a place of pain. Cool speaks with wisdom and understanding beyond his years and uses his ‘broken home blues’ to leave his listeners with an open letter to his upbringing. “Uptown Freestyle” is another lyrical banger and “Good Lookin” puts his words on par with the best out now. From start to finish, ‘God’ is a solid, solid offering. If a you can make it off a mixtape, then someone look towards The Cool Quest for the next up. An artist that deserves more spin, respect where its due.

MUSIC VIDEO: The Holy Karon – Life’s Grim

the holy karon

The Holy Karon is a name that’s gaining some clout out of the perpetually underrated Baltimore hip-hop scene. He comes with a unique style and voice that grabs the listeners attention by the throat and doesn’t let go. “Life’s Grim” isn’t an exception. Directed by Desean Ragland, the premier videographer in the Baltimore underground scene, the video gives the ominous vibes one comes to expect from the evil one.

At first, and sometimes second glance, The Holy Karon is just a shock value rapper. It would seem that he relies on his murderous verbal images and satanic aura to remain relevant in the constantly shifting world of internet-based rap. But dig a little deeper, I implore you. He comes with a commentary that is veiled by his imagery and persona. Often, The Holy Karon isn’t speaking on fake devils and childish 666 shit, but he’s telling a story about the human condition. Karon’s music comes from a place of thinking, almost a place of compassion for the down-and-outs and the disenfranchised. If you’re still not convinced, listen to the a capella at the end of ‘Life’s Grim’. When you’re chills subside, you’ll realize The Holy Karon is much, much more than a shock rapper.

MUSIC VIDEO: Trevon Duane & 7 Oceans – Finesse of the Calm

Screen Shot 2013-09-22 at 2.56.39 PM

Have you heard of the UnderWorld Mafia yet? Well I can’t blame you, they’re still grinding, working to force their come up. But they run deep, very deep. If I’m being honest, I can’t even name all the members. The group is pretty spread out, using the internet to connect their infinite vibes. Leading the way is Gabriel Prentis, but no one is very far behind. This video features Trevon Duane and 7 Oceans with production by Eric Dingus. You’ve probably heard some of Eric Dingus’ production, even if you’re not aware of it. This dude has been slaying the come-up scene for a little while now.

‘Finesse of the Calm’ is a nice two-way transitional song, each artist getting their own groove to work with. Trevon comes with a quicker, harsher, and more homicidal flow that possesses a bit more polish than his counterpart. It’s easy to tell that he spends time working on his rhyme schemes and delivery. 7 Oceans comes off as a bit more undergraduate, but it’s not a bad thing. He’s got that innocent space-cadet vibe that goes well with his personal style. I think his verse comes off as a bit more personal and wholesome, and with a bit more time he could really kill the game. I dig that each of them tailored their verses to their own style instead of forcing themselves into some precut rapper mold. Eric Dingus brings the entire thing together beautifully; he’s becoming a seasoned pro in the scene. All together, it’s not a bad offering and the video creates a good jumping off point for these two. Keep your ears peeled for more from UnderWorld Mafia, big things are coming.

Willie J. Jr. Featuring Tripz Traxxx- The Sickness (Download/Listen)

Sickness_FixedA

Sickness_FixedA

While Halloween is quite some time away, we’re here with a scary ode to being sick. Chicago rapper Willie J. Jr. drops off The Sickness. Featuring Tripz Traxxx, these two rappers trade frightening bars over this super trippy beat. There seems to be a Hopsin and Tech N9ne vibe while zoning off to this one. When you want to let someone know just how sick you are, this is definitely the perfect theme song.

New Music: BLKSUNCHILD – Yo (Brighter Days)

BLKSUNCHILD

Every once in a while, an artist comes along that just blows you away. BLKSUNCHILD is that artist. He is a new breed of artist, combining the soul of generations past with a powerful vision of the future. Pigeonholing him under the title “rapper” would be an injustice, he’s a visionary of many crafts.

In his latest leak from his forthcoming EP, “Yo (Brighter Days)” is a powerful track. Filled with inspiration and messages of greener grass, BLKSUNCHILD taps into the wealth of soul at his disposal for this one. Over a serene piano-inspired beat BLKSUNCHILD lays himself down on this track. You can tell he uses his music as a release, an escape from the harsh reality we all endure.

Truly one of the voices of the struggle, BLKSUNCHILD is one of the best artists you’ve never heard of. Get in the know.

NikkiSiixx: Is There Still Hope For Mainstream Hip-Hop?

530051_10151026631078193_1985831957_n

Is there still hope for mainstream hip-hop? I asked myself this question the other day because it’s been awhile since I heard the radio or seen any music videos on tv. And the last time I tuned into that, I wasn’t to pleased. I felt that there wasn’t any limitations on what can be said on air. It’s crazy to think, in a way the media was just promoting the worse of the worse. Then one day I was introduced to Underground Hip-Hop. You would think they’ll be the same since it’s still labeled hip-hop. Nope, they’re not. The Underground has more heart and devotion to it.

As a journalist, I felt the need to explore into the current Mainstream atmosphere. While blogging on my laptop I decided to watch tv. Instead of watching Cartoon Network. I wanted to watch some music videos. While searching through the channels MTV was playing one of the TEEN PREGNANCY shows, VH1 was playing LOVE & HIP-HOP which is a reality series based off women who are in the Music Entertainment Industry and all their drama. OKAY! None of these channels will do. Then I came across MTV JAMS.

Right before the commercial break was over. I asked myself “Is there still hope for mainstream hip-hop?” I will base my decision off the first music video I see. This will let me know how far the media will let anything go on tv to just to attract more viewers. If it was a great positive video, I might be able to open up my world to Mainstream Hip-Hop.

BUT LADIES & GENTS! THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT COMES UP:

2 Chainz – I LUV DEM STRIPPERS
Of course with a response like that my answer will be that there isn’t hope. I thought at one point television you weren’t allowed to see certain women’s body parts, anyone doing drugs, and saying any curse words were bleeped out. Apparently television has loosened up and just let pretty much anything go on air.

While watching the video I thought to myself what if a child came across this now? Since it was around 4 o’ clock in the afternoon. Perfect timing for when a kid should be home after school. I find this to be very disturbing.

That’s why I have so much love for the underground. There’s so much respect in the lyricism. The Underground will rise above the rest.
